My chances of getting into Indiana University Fall of 2012

Hi I am a soon-to-be senior in central Indiana. I am really hoping to get accetped into Indiana University, but I'm not sure of my chances.......... Here are my stats:
1. Have taken two Honors English classes, two AP classes, and soon will be taking W131 and C121 (college classes IU offers at my highschool).
2. I have a 3.04 GPA ( curently re-taking geometry to raise that).
3. SAT's 430-math, 550-critical reading, and 580-writing (these were my best scores out of three testing tires).
4. I am interested in IU's ROTC Air Force programs and other particular language programs (SWEESEL).
5. I plan on applying on-line as well as in person so they really get to know me and why I want to go to IU, along with many letters of recommendations and a well prepared essay.
6. I am applying very early (around Aug. 10th), hoping this will raise my chances?

I think I have a pretty good chance of getting in, but based on my testing scores I'm not so sure. Hopefully meeting with an admissions advisor to let them get to know me will help.
Thanks for all of your help and/or advice!! :)

What’s your weighted GPA? If it’s higher than 3.04 than that should help you out. But your SAT score is rather low for IU. I’d definitely recommend retaking it and sending in your scores even if it’s after you apply.

Right now I think IU is a bit of a reach for you because of your test scores and GPA. In the past they might have worked but now IU is getting more competitive each year.

Talk with guidance at your high school – my son has been told by his high school that you need a minimum 3.4 gpa for Bloomington and was told at a Bloomington admissions info session that the average unweighted gpa for admits is 3.6. Right now, he is a bit below the average gpa and has been told by admissions that he is competitive for admission only because he is the most rigorous curriculum and has tested at the higher end for Bloomington’s range.

Talk with your guidance office; they may be able to write a strong letter which puts your gpa and testing in context. But as many IN families are discovering, there is no certainty when it comes to admission for Bloomington.

You are showing good initiative taking college classes. I.U. will look closely at test scores because high school grading can be inconsistent. My suggestion would be to take the ACT. Some do better on this test. You may not be accepted right away, but I think your chances are decent.

Ok well I’m actually not sure if that is my weighted GPA or not lol And I have taken the SAT 3 different times and those were my best scores  Ive thought about taking the ACT though also. Thank you for all of your help guys!! :)

The ACT is a different test, and many students who don’t do well on the SAT do just fine on the ACT, and vice versa. If you are one who doesn’t test well on the SAT, taking it 3 times won’t help. Definitely sign up for the September ACT and give that a go. Pick up the red ACT review book and familiarize yourself with the format. FWIW, many students run into time issues with the ACT, so pacing yourself is key, and the ACT doesn’t penalize for wrong answers like the SAT does, so you don’t want to leave any questions blank. Good luck!
