Thank you so much!
Also, I was wondering if my AP Calc BC score and the fact I’m taking Calc 3 and Linear Algebra my senior year will counteract my terrible SAT Math 2 score?
Your leadership and volunteering look great. You mentioned that you plan to retake the SAT math and that is probably a good idea. You also have a good number of AP classes. Your GPA is in a good range. Are you considering retaking the ACT or the SAT? It may be a good idea. I would focus on one or the other, the one you feel you will do better on. Too many students attempt to take both the SAT and ACT, but is is truly not necessary. You don’t have a greater chance of acceptance if you take both. The fact that you are taking those math classes as a senior is outstanding and will be impressive to the application readers. I think you should try to get your math scores up, but overall you are a very strong applicant. One more thing…don’t underestimate the power to of your essays. They do carry a fair amount of weight and you can shine through them. Best wishes to you!
Definitely re-take the SAT Math 2. While the 5 on the BC might do a little bit to mitigate the low score, you have to remember that pretty much every applicant who got a 5 on the BC probably got a score close to 800.
Your math SAT is okay, but your verbal could use another 50 points to feel a little bit better about your chances.
Are you instate (California resident)?
If so, spend time on those essays.
Submit the ACT not the SAT.
Because you’re definitely competitive and have a real shot. As you know, UCLA is a dream school for 100,000 students so, while you’re competitive and have a definite shot, don’t put all your eggs in the same basket and apply to other UCs as well as Calpoly SLO and either CPP or Sdsu plus run the NPC on private universities that would give you merit aid or financial aid for those terrific stats.
The advice the last poster gave to submit the ACT and not the SAT is not going to work. If you submit your SAT subject tests (which you should do), your SAT will automatically be sent along with them.
Good advice to future applicants: try out BOTH test unofficially. Most schools offer practice ones. Don’t take the SAT unless you are sure you’ll do better on it than the ACT because of the fact that the SAT score is sent automatically with the subject test scores.
I just read this on the UCI website. It may be helpful. In the last paragraph it states that “If you have not already done so, you must request that all testing agencies send your scores to UCI.” Again, I think you should check for yourself.
Note: Do not use the score choice option to withhold reporting of SAT Subject Test scores. UC considers only a student’s highest SAT Subject Test scores so there is no advantage to withholding scores. NOTE: The Henry Samueli School of Engineering recommends that freshmen applicants in Engineering majors take the SAT Subject Test in math Level 2.
If you have not already done so, you must request that all testing agencies send your scores to UCI. Also, in your application for admission you listed dates on which you plan to take any remaining or repeated tests. If your testing plans change, contact your UCI admissions counselor.
Had comparable stats and got into UCLA last year. My essays were pretty good though but I think academically you qualify and it will just be a matter of whether or not your essays resonate well with the admissions officers. College admissions are such a toss up so no one here can give you, with certainty, an idea of whether or not you will get in when applying to top 30 schools in the country. Good luck!
