Chance Me: Lafayette College

I’m a senior named Samantha from NJ. I love Lafayette but I’m applying RD because I didn’t want to be financially bonded in case I got an offer from another school that I couldn’t turn down. I’m starting to get nervous about my chances though!!

ACT: 32

GPA: 3.84

  • I suffered from a severe concussion that caused me to be homeschooled for half of sophomore year. This really affected my gpa
  • because of this^^ strong upward trend. 4.0 gpa senior year and 4.3 gpa first half of senior year

Essays: pretty strong

  • common app essay: wrote about my concussion and how I’m turning a negative experience into something positive by doing a year long research project on mental health after concussions. This is experience also helped shape my career path (neuroscience major)
  • why lafayette essay was pretty strong as well

ECs: danced competitively for most of my life, volunteer at animal rescue on the weekends, involved in a lot of theatre stuff for the first half of high school, NHS, WLHS, training to become certified yoga instructor, job with photographer since sophomore year

Had a great interview at Laf but it seemed pretty causal. I have visited campus 3 times so I hope that shows my interest.

Letters of Rec: pretty strong I hope!!

Applied for financial aid but we aren’t really expecting to need much

@neuroscience27 It sounds as if your chances are very good! My D has also applied and it is her first choice but we. Will need some $ to make it possible. We have also visited 3 times and she is also a dancer. She has applied to engineering- this wait is going to be incredibly long! Hoping for good news for both of you at the end of this wait!

I am guessing your chances are pretty good. Lafayette was a last minute addition for my daughter and we haven’t visited yet! She has similar stats though -
ACT 33
SAT 1480
GPA 4.2 weighted (probably 3.8 unweighted)
Six AP classes, all the rest honors
Varsity swimmer, co-captain senior year
Fluent in Spanish
Traveled to China, spent a month in Chile on a cultural exchange
Active in church leadership group
Works as a lifeguard and swim instructor

Her first choices are Bowdoin (applied ED and was deferred) and Smith, but the other schools she is looking at are Vassar, Wesleyan, Macalester, Grinnell, and Centre. She visited Swarthmore and Haverford and didn’t like them. Funny how that works!

It is going to be a long couple of months waiting for information…
