Hi, I’m currently a junior going to public school in the Northeast and I wanted to hear some input about my not-so-great stats. I don’t think I’m a bad student by any means, but I’m not the best at taking tests, especially the SAT, and that also affects my GPA.
GPA: 4.2 W, 3.7 UW
APs (by the end of sr year): Chinese (5), APUSH, pysch, polisci either econ or stats
SAT: currently a 1400, I don’t know how much higher I can bring it but highly doubt I will surpass a 1450
I have excellent ECs - was captain of the debate team and ran several summer camps in high school, highly involved in my school newspaper, student government, etc.
Can anyone chance me for schools like UNC, Northeastern, BU, NYU, UCSD, etc. for law or business programs? If you don’t think I’m in that caliber, please help me get a sense of where I am at ? Thanks!
jeez you are a nerd haha. 1400 is bad sat??
And a 3.7 is not a mediocre GPA…
First of all, a 1400 is not horrible, it’s good. It’s like 97th percentile and it will get you into a lot of good colleges. My friend got into GW with a 1400. Your GPA is also good. I would say that if you want to get into BU, NYU, and Northeastern try to retake the SAT though. Get a free trial for UWorld and use Khan Academy. It is possible to improve. I improved by 110 points from my first SAT take to my 2nd. I thought I was only going to improve 20 or 30. I would say its less about the amount of practice and more about the quality of the practice. BU and NYU are high matches with a 1400, low reach for Northeastern.
Hi! Thank you to @Keriell @Hamurtle @EmpireFrontier for your responses, they were really helpful. I just wanted to make a couple of additions to my original post
First, the title wasn’t very well thought-out. I recognize that my SAT is not “horrible” and didn’t mean to come off as cocky or pretentious, and would really hate to make anyone with a lower score than myself feel bad. I chose the language I used carelessly, and would like to apologize for that. Hopefully I didn’t come off the wrong way
I described my GPA as “mediocre” because I don’t think it’s that stellar. Similarly to my SAT description, I didn’t say that to make anyone feel bad or to be unnecessarily dramatic or anything like that. My UW is not bad, and I would agree with that. My weighted is a little bit low in comparison to some of the people I know getting into the schools that I am interested in which is why I am a little bit stressed. Hopefully all of that is understandable! Also, my school might not calculate GPA the same as your’s or a system that you’re familiar with. My transcript is not that good: I have a mix of B+s and Bs which is not that good. A lot of people ask how my GPA is then higher than most straight-B students’ but I take a lot of honors classes which are calculated differently.
If your unweighted GPA is 3.7, then you must have more A grades than B grades. If that is not the case, you may need to recalculate your unweighted GPA correctly.
