Hi yes hello! I know “chance me” threads are annoying and I don’t expect any responses but I’m just a little curious. Please chance me for University Michigan LSA 2023.
Ever since I was little, Michigan has been my dream school. My family attends football games every year, I know the campus like the back of my hand, and I have many friends in the greater Detroit area. My parents both went there, my dad was class of '84 with two degrees (Economics and something else idk) and my mom was class of '82 with a degree in Journalism. They give money, like a lot, but that should not impact my admissions chances because it’s public. 2 grandparents, 2 aunts and one uncle all attended the U of M also. I have no siblings. Michigan tends to like my high school, and it is the most applied-to public school besides UMD, my in-state.
Stats:
We don’t do class rank.
3.90 Unweighted GPA
4.62 Weighted GPA
32 ACT, 33 composite but ik they don’t really look
680 SAT II History but I might take french in august
APUSH (5) AP Gov (5) AP Calc AB, AP French, AP Language, AP Comparative Politics (idk the scores yet)
Signed up for AP World, AP Statistics, AP Macro & Micro, AP Environ Science next year.
EC:
Captain of my Speech & Debate team, been on the team for 3 years now

I have visited Michigan, and I had a meeting with Dr. Bednar, one of the top political science professors and head of the Michigan in Washington program. She’s super sweet!
I am a caucasian female with >200k family income a year, and I live in a very affluent (and homogenous) area.
Thank you in advance if anyone even sees this thread lol.
AP Calc AB (4), AP French (4), AP Language (5), AP Comparative Politics (5)
I think you will be a competitive applicant.
AP scores are good, and you have lots of them. UW GPA midrange, but you might want to get your ACT up a notch or two since you are applying from OOS. I’ve seen rejections this year on this forum from OOS applicants with ACTs of 35. If you are applying to business or engineering (doesn’t sound like it), definitely get that ACT up. EC’s are great if you are planning on applying to LSA for political science.
Try to get Act to 33/34. Just a few more correct answers gets you there and a better chance for out-of state.
Your parents being significant donors and alumni WILL positively impact your application. To what degree it will help will depend on how much they have donated.
@yikesyikesyikes… What is the basis of this or is this just a hunch? I know plenty of kids that didn’t get in with parents that donate yearly and are alumni.
@Knowsstuff
I have reliable sources - it is common practice across the higher ed landscape: “development case admissions”.
Donating a small amount yearly would not constitute a development case, but it may positively impact an application to an extent. Donating “like a lot” as the OP describes, may constitute a special case in which the admissions case is almost certainly positively impacted.
In any case, having engaged alumni as parents helps. Super engaged/generous parents as alumni would make a really significant impact.
@yikesyikesyikes… Thanks for clearing that up. So I guess like $5-$10,000 /year is not enough… Ha… My wife went to Michigan and we wonder if that helped my OOS son in anyway. I guess it could never hurt…I do like the fact the OP met with a professor. My son did that and used that in one of his essays plus I think you gain so much more information and it truly shows interest.
Thx
thank you so much everyone!
Another thing I find it really helpful for us is that visit the school if you have time. Schedule a session with your prospective major administrator/students and pay special attention to the activities/classes you like. Incorporate them into your essay and really show them that you’ve done your research and REALLY want to be there.
I got accepted in case anyone sees this lol
Congrats… Out of curiosity did you retake the act or use your same score?
