Chance me: MIT, Cornell, CMU, and others

White female from rural CT
SAT: 2250
CR: 720, M: 770, W: 760
(taking again, expect 2300ish)
SAT II:
Physics: 780
Math II: 760
Math I: 790 (sending to MIT, they require one math or the other)
GPA: 96.66%
Class doesn't rank but top 10%

APs: Physics 5, Spanish 5, Eng. Lit 5, taking 4 more this year. (this is more AP tests than anyone else in my grade took, I self studied for spanish because my school doesn't have AP)

-I'm the school's stage manager and technical director and I was the lighting operator for 2 years, I've done over 10 plays (counting the middle school shows) and numerous other performances, I'm writing a guide for new incoming members so they know where everything is and how it all works

-I've done volunteer technical backstage work for some famous dance groups and the waterbury symphony orchestra

-I'm in charge of my school's FTC robotics team and I was the coach last year

-I've volunteered over 800 hours at a nonprofit art center where I do management stuff and also teach classes (getting a rec from the executive director). I work there over the summer paid co-running their entire summer program and teaching

-built a telescope for fun

-NHS

-Math and science tutor

-Physics Olympics (nothing big)

-I've done Summer@Brown for materials engineering and NC State summer program for materials engineering as well

All of my ECs sort of revolve around teaching and leadership: stage manager, the nonprofit, math tutor, robotics all involve showing others what to do and sort of being in charge and setting an example. I plan to show them all through that light, my big focus is helping others to understand. I've taught math/science classes when teachers were out also

Others:
AP Scholar (only one in my school), CAPT advanced scholar (state award, also only one in my school), national merit possible semifinalist but I'm right at the cutoff (highest score in my school), bausch and lomb science award, best math student award two years in a row, wellesley book award, won a state award in theater

-This has happened three times: my school doesn't offer a course I want so I find a way around it. I managed to get honors credit in chemistry, I took the AP spanish exam anyways, and I started an AP computer science class through online that 10 people are taking (a lot for my school)

SCHOOLS:
MIT
Olin College <3
Cornell University
Carnegie Mellon
RPI
Harvey Mudd
U Rochester
UConn

MAJOR: engineering, materials specifically, NANOTECH IS SO COOL

MIT REACH FOR ANYBODY
Olin College <3 MATCH
Cornell University MATCH
Carnegie Mellon GOOD CHANCE
RPI MATCH
Harvey Mudd MATCH
U Rochester IN WITH SIGNIFICANT MERIT AID
UConn FULL RIDE, LIKELY NUTMEG SCHOLARSHIP

^I agree  Awesome stats you’ve got, OP!

Wow awesome news! I’m doing MIT EA, so I’ll probably get deferred, and now I’m optimistic about having other options. Thanks guys!

bump! anyone else? :)

Stats for son last year GPA: 3.8 UW, top 10 percent, SAT–770 M/660 CR, SAT II–750M/700 Physics. Leadership ECs (class vp, paper EIC). Rejected at MIT and CM for CS. Your stats are a bit better, so good luck!

Nice stats. Good science opportunities for women exist, especially if you underline the science bits in your app. This might be of advantage in Tech schools…now lets see, of the schools I’m familiar with:
MIT: You know the deal with it

Cornell University: Low reach…applying early might be in your favor, if you change your mind on MIT…

Carnegie Mellon: Low Reach/Match. I see it.
RPI: Match
Harvey Mudd: Match? Not as sure.
U Rochester: Match/safety
UConn: Match/Safety

You have really good chances at Cornell/CMU imo.

Send your Math 2. A 760 on Math 2 is better than a 790 on Math 1; it just doesn’t say much.

@TypeRA, yeah, but I feel like after MIT, my next choices are CMU and Olin, so I don’t want to apply early at Cornell in that case. Thanks for your other opinions though, if I could swing admission, I could really see myself at CMU. Pittsburgh is just a bit far to ED.

Thank you guys for the encouraging words. As long as I get into one of MIT/Cornell/CMU/RPI I’m happy  (first three and I’m REALLY happy!)

“Built a telescope for fun”

You’re in.

But in all seriousness you have a great shot at all of those. Good job and good luck

Haha thank you!!! I’ll report back! Anyone else?

Hey guys, bumping this because I need advice:

Do you think I need to use the ED advantage? Looking at my school’s naviance, nobody has gotten into ANY of these schools (save 1 to RPI and a ton to UConn) in 10 years. Will I actually get into any of these RD?

I’m pretty sure you can more or less get into most of these schools. Just ED where you’d want to go to most and it’ll all go from there. Regardless you have a pretty good chance at some of these even if you RD.

^Yes, but I’m EAing MIT and not EDing, it’s too early for me to commit. Though depending how much I like CMU’s sleeping bag weekend I might ED there.

I’m more worried about, since I’m RDing all of them, am I likely to get into any?

MIT as far as I know does not have ED as an option anyways. Just thought I should mention that. In any case, the EA and RD acceptance rates there are relatively equal.

I’m just curious what you plan on writing your essay about what you do for fun. Are you going to talk about the telescope?

Naw, I’ll mention the telescope elsewhere, or maybe do a makers portfolio. I’m probably gonna write about contra dancing, or dying my hair, or something that I do for fun regularly.

I know! Yeah, EA, I can’t do anything binding yet

—Wondering why you aren’t including Stanford, Northwestern or Michigan (all strong engineering schools) in your search?..

UPDATE EVERYBODY:

Accepted at my dream schools, Carnegie Mellon ED and MIT EA!!! Thanks for the chancing  hope this can help someone else!
