Chance Me? (New here, Junior in High School)

As the title says, I'm currently a Filipino Junior at a Magnet School (Career and Technical Academy) in Nevada. I just signed up here on College Confidential and this is my first post. I'm heavily focused on my college search and working on preparation like the SAT's in March and considering more EC's and AP classes during senior year. I'm dead set on majoring in Civil Engineering and thinking of going out-of-state. First, my stats:

School: Southwest Career and Technical Academy, Las Vegas, Nevada (New School, 2009)
Program Area/Major: Hospitality (don't know if it will increase my chances for Engr.)

GPA: 3.472, 3.972 weighted, UC GPA of about 3.4 (sucks that my UC gpa is weak)
-It should be around ~4.2 weighted by graduation

SAT: (I averaged my two PSAT scores for now, taking the real one in March)
Reading:570 - Math:600 - Writing:580

AP: APUSH (Junior Year), AP Calc AB + AP Physics B (Senior Year)

Misc: Three Years of Spanish, All Honors for non-AP Core Classes, Electives like Marketing 1 and 2, Graphic Design 1 and 2, Psychology, Sociology and Photography.

ECs: Unfortunately, I've been pretty lazy when it comes to clubs but anyway I'm currently an inactive DECA member and I plan to join NHS this spring and Key Club in the fall. My program area Hospitality has internships during the second semester of senior year but I don't know if that counts nor helps. School doesn't have sports...

Prospective Schools: Not going for any IVYs and mostly staying on the West Coast. Also, I'm guaranteed admission into UNLV and UNR since I'm headed for the advanced diploma!

Univ. of Washington, Seattle
Cal State Sacramento (for WUE)
San Jose State
Cal Poly SLO
Cal Poly Pomona
UC Irvine (dream/top-choice)
San Diego State
UT Austin
Univ. of Houston
Univ. of Illinois, Chicago

Major: Civil Engineering

I don't even know if I can ask for a chance since I'm a junior but if anyone can give me any preliminary advice or comments, it would be great! Thanks!

UWA and the Californian schools are sensitive to payment capability; add one notch of odds if you can pay full freight to those schools.

UWA: High match
Sac State: Safety
SJSU: Match
Cal Poly SLO: Reach
CPP: Match
UCI: Reach
SDSU: High match
UT-Austin: Reach
U Houston: Low match
UIC: Low match

Hmm I see. Thanks Catria! I knew UCI, CP SLO and UT Austin would be a reach. All of them are top notch schools for a reason. So does HIGH match mean really good chances? I don’t completely get the system yet haha

A high match is harder to get in than a low match…

Oh Okay. Thanks! Anything else from anyone?

Bump!!!

Bump Again!!! Any help, please!

Final Bump! Anything from anyone? I’ll be glad to take a look and chance back.

UT Austin is a high reach because you are out of state, and going into engineering. The majority of the students at UT are from Texas. University of Houston, you have a lot better shot because they are a LOT less selective and the school is not nearly as good. Those are the only ones I can help you with.

UWA: High match

^ Perfect reply, if you ask me. I can’t remember how to quote, all credit is to Catria, obviously.

Focus on boosting those SAT scores, don’t get your heat set on U of T. Welcome to the site, by the way. Enjoy all the trolls you’ll get.

If you have any questions about anything, just message me, I’ll be willing to help you it in anyway I can.

@melpru Thanks! I did take a look at UT Austin stats a little bit deeper in the past 24 hours and my chances do look slim. It is the flagship university anyway. When I trim down my list I will probably take out Austin and Seattle but things could change. Btw, In no way is Univ. of Houston a bad university right? Not worse than UNLV or Sac State I hope.

@FourierSeries Thanks! You really think those chances are accurate? that’s good to know then x) I wouldn’t mind any of those schools tbh. I’m really starting to like this site, really informative haha. I will probably make another chance entry once I get my real SAT score in late March. Going to take a break from the college search and start my scholarship hunt. but thanks for formally welcoming me here again!

Your SAT scores (based on PSAT) right now hurt, good luck for March - try aiming for a 2000, it would put you in much better shape for some of your more selective schools.

UT: Reach
UW/CPSLO: High match-reach
UCI: High match

Don’t know too much about the rest of the schools on your list, but from what I do know, you should be able to get into all of them, as in they should all be safeties/matches.

Thanks SoDoMojo! That feels reassuring. I will surely cram for the SAT. I think averaging my psat scores was IMO low balling myself but the only way to truly find out is to study hard and take the test. It would be great to exceed 650 for all three sections. Yes, Austin and Seattle have very high expectations (especially Seattle in terms of essays/personal statements) so I have to reconsider the two when fall comes around. Cal Poly SLO is the better one academically but I do understand I have better chance in Pomona (hell, it’s closer to home in Vegas haha). Like I posted, Irvine is my dream school. Just getting in is the first obstacle, paying for it would be the bigger challenge. At least I’m pretty much safe at the other universities, Thanks again!

The university of Houston is in the Third Ward (the ghetto). It’s not a terrible place but there is a little bit of crime on and around campus. It is tier one so it is a good school and there is a lot to do in downtown Houston.

All cities have a bad side, so I wouldn’t worry about it much. The Admit Rate, average GPA and SAT and tuition match up with me. I ve read if you accumulate $2000 in scholarships you get in state tuition =) I’ll think about all these schools in depth later on (including area and crime)

BUMP!!!

I’ve loved all of the input I’ve gotten from you guys but can anyone give anymore chances? x)
