Hi,

I'm a 28-year-old female community college student living in Baltimore. I am looking to transfer to Towson University or UMBC around Baltimore.

What are my chances? Here are my stats:

I have completed 50 credit hours so far, with a 4.0 GPA.

I am a part-time student with a full-time job as a clinician in a medical practice, but I also do IT, marketing, blog writing and other admin projects there. I also interpret for Spanish-speaking patients there.

I volunteer translating recipes and other materials into Spanish from English for an animal rights/vegetarian group in Baltimore. This is significant because I am not hispanic, but I taught myself Spanish for the most part and I am now nearly fluent.

I want to major in Applied Math.

Here's the kicker: (!)

I tried at another CC 10 years ago, right out of high school, and I did very badly. I completed 21 credits with a 2.0 and withdrew from many classes in the end.

At the time, my parents were drug users and I was distracted by my home life. Also as the child of drug users, I saw myself as unworthy and incompetent of attaining education or success. I had zero self-esteem and no direction. I am worried this will hurt my chances. I am not sure I'd want to put an explanation like that on a college app either. :/

I am worried that my mistakes 10 years ago will keep me from continuing to a good university, even though my past is not indicative of my academic ability now.

Comments/suggestions?

Thanks a lot.
