Chance me! Northwestern, UChicago, Columbia, and more

Hey guys! Here’s a rundown of my profile, if you could estimate my chances for some of my top schools and/or provide some help on how to improve my application, that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Basics:
Straight white guy, 11th grade
*NB: I’m two years young for the grade, idk if that will make a positive difference but I figured I’d put it out there just in case
Live in CA, go to private school. Pretty small, doesn’t rank students

Major/colleges:

I’m not quite sure what I’ll major in yet, but I think it will be business with some other double major or minor. I love football and I’m hoping to get involved in the NFL in some capacity after college, so I figure business will probably set me up for that. Plus, I just like the competition and problem-solving aspect of business as well.

  1. Northwestern (lottery)
  2. UChicago (lottery)
  3. Columbia (lottery) T-4. Harvard (lottery) T-4. Georgetown (lottery, but both parents went there so that might help) T-4. Penn (lottery)
  4. UMich Ann Arbor (target)
  5. CMC (safety/target)
  6. UCLA (target)
  7. UCSD (safety/target)

I know it’s a top-heavy list, but if I just got into one of those top three choices I’d be ecstatic. I could probably stand to round it out some more, but I’d be happy going almost anywhere on the list so I’m not too worried about picking more lottery schools than safeties.

Grades/GPA:
around 3.95 UW I think, 4.32 weighted

By graduation I’ll have taken 9 AP classes and 10 AP tests, plus 5 extra honors courses. My school doesn’t offer a ton of APs, so suffice it to say I’m maxing out the course offerings across the board. Here are the APs:

Environmental Science - 10th grade, 5
Spanish - 11th grade
English - 11th grade
APUSH - I’ll take the test this year in 11th grade, my school doesn’t offer APUSH so it’s the best I can do.
Chem - 11th grade
Spanish Lit - 12th grade
English Lit - 12th grade
Physics C - 12th grade
Calc BC - 12th grade
Chinese - 12th grade

Tests:
SAT (single sitting): 1560 composite, 790 english 770 math
I’ll take a pair of SAT subject tests in June, might take more but I don’t think I’ll need them
Also, I got a 222 for the national merit scholar selection index. Won’t know until september but I might snag a national merit scholarship or at least a commendation so that would be great

ECs/Other:

-4 year baseball player, 2 year starter (school only has 1 team and we compete in low divisions, but anything helps lmao)
-3 year football player, 2 year starting QB/captain (again, school only has one flag team, it’s awful but it’s the best we got)
-Founded JSA chapter in 10th grade, I’ll be a leader all 3 years
-4 years Mock Trial, 3 years as a student leader
-Played drums since age 4, in a casual band with some friends
-Played piano since age 7, I have a couple national piano guild awards/plaques etc from that
-Been writing daily for an NFL/sports blog since before junior year (not massive, but I average ~500 readers normally, and on a good news day I’ll crack 1k pageviews. My high is around 3500 clicks once).
-Working with a friend (he graduated from Columbia engineering a couple years ago) on creating a statistical model to predict what pitch an MLB pitcher will throw at any given time. After that’s done we’re going to do a similar one with NFL teams and play calls.
-Worked with my chemistry teacher with an experiment that he will be publishing soon in a national chemistry education journal.
-Went on a summer trip with Hillsdale college last year, got 4 History college credits for it from the university
-Will be attending a summer program at Columbia this year
-Trying to volunteer at USO near me this summer, if all goes well I should end up with around 100 hours. Not stellar, but at least most of them will be in one place.

I’m confident in my writing skills, so I’m not too worried about the essays, and I think I’ve got two good recs lined up. One of them is a recent Northwestern grad and the other used to teach at UChicago if that helps.

Once again, thank you guys! Any feedback would be much appreciated.

@xcax12 i m sure you realize that quite a few of your choices do not offer undergraduate business majors, right? not that you need to study business to break into business after college, but just pointing it out since you want to study business.
Out of the schools on your list only Penn, Georgetown, UMich have actual undergrad business schools.

Also Georgetown is not really as hard to get into as the ivies, and Chicago/Northwestern on your list. I would classify it as more of a target. Even more so given your legacy status.

@Penn95 Thank you! Yeah I was thinking about strong all-around schools that have a higher amount of students taking combined majors, but I could definitely stand to recalculate it more around business…I know for example at Northwestern you can take undergraduate classes and get a business certificate (two classes less than a minor I believe) from Kellogg but I’m not sure about most of the other places on that list. Thank you once again I appreciate it!

Id say you have a decent shot at all! Especially with your legacy status at Georgetown. I wouldn’t consider CMC a safety (they choose very quirky diverse students from what I’ve seen, not just smart people). Honestly if you ED northwestern and craft your essay to show interest (hopefully you visited), I think you have a really good shot
