No, no, no blaksheep is messing with you. You look to be a very solid OOS candidate. Plan to retake the SAT in the fall of your senior year to try to get the verbal score up. To do this, read this summer. Then plan to apply early. Go to the UNC admissions web site and read Director of Admissions Steve Farmer’s blog entry about what UNC looks for in the essays. Take the essays seriously. Line up a good teacher recommendation early your senior year. UNC only asks for one teacher rec. Make sure the teacher knows you well. Since you are new to your high school this year you may want to think about who that teacher will be and cultivate that relationship some this year. If you apply early (non binding) only your grades through your junior year will be considered, but they will look closely at the rigor of your senior year course load so don’t slack off and don’t intend to drop any of those hard courses your senior spring. Again, take the essays seriously: tell an honest, unpretentious story. If you want to be considered for honors, do some “mental wrestling” in those essays. Good luck.

Thanks for the input smbsmom. It’s refreshing to hear that i actually have a shot at getting into this school. And yeah, if i can get that verbal to like 700 at least, that would be awesome.

i think that you have a shot. and a better shot if you can raise your critical reading score.

keep in mind OOS students are the way that a lot of schools (who cap oos in admissions) fulfill those spots they need on their sports teams, in their band, in terms of their racial diversity, in their departments, etc… so if there’s something unique, a type of diversity that you can add to unc that you can portray in your application through your interests/essay/classes/whatever, then try doing that.

like i probably wouldn’t talk about church stuff unless you think that you can do it very well… the coral reef society club sounds interesting though – and different (does it have anything to do with coral reef protection?). the more unusual, atypical, interesting topic will win most likely win over the typical topic.

really. the essay. take it seriously. and make it really good. don’t think it doesn’t matter - because it does. just reiterating what smbsmom is saying. she’s right. she’s also right about applying early - get that app in by the 1st deadline!

keep in mind that UNC doesn’t track (demonstrated) interest so the visit doesn’t really matter to them. (though it probably matters to you :))

i got into the honors program. i had a 2200, a 3.76UW at an extremely rigorous school (2 kids out of 100 have straight A/A-'s). my essays were very strong (teacher who worked for uchicago admissions read them and said they were fantastic)… and i’m a urm (which didn’t hurt, if you catch my drift). i think my essays and my urm status were probably what got me the invite.

I got in with a lower SAT score than that and I’m a white male. (Middle-eastern but that counts as white… what a load of bull****)

But I digress, yes you have a shot. My SAT was a 2080 but I think my recs and essays got me in. My long essay was about the birth of my little sister last year and the responsibility it gave me. And my short essay was about trying something new, cheerleading in my school’s annual Powder Puff game (haha awesome essay topic, I’m sure my Admissions Officer loved it).
My rec was from my Calc BC AP teacher, who was also my varsity soccer coach for 3 years, who I also am a TA for this year. It was an amazing rec. So yes, you have a shot, a solid one. If you make sure you focus on your essays and get a teacher who knows you amazingly to write your rec.

Apply EA and I give you about a 50-60% shot.

well. to make you feel better. i got in with a 2050, 760 math, 610 verbal, 680 writing and my essay was on rap music. soooooo don’t stress so much over the essays. the more you stay true to yourself the better. also don’t believe that you need ridiculous stats to get in. i didn’t and i got in i think because i didn’t BS anything and had fun with it. i think your SAT’s are fine as long as you stay open and honest (maybe funny) in your application

even though i posted at first that i visited, i really didn’t at that point. Just visited this weekend and fell in love with the school. Now I’m just outrageously nervous for next year.

thanks for letting me know about everything everyone! Hopefully i have enough APs and junk this year and next to get in
