First of all, some things about me so you get an idea, if these will be suitable for me or now.

I'm an Indian student. I'm 17 year old now (March 2011) and I'll be completing my class XII (high school) in March 2012. So, I'm looking for a Sep 2012 intake.. I'm looking to apply somewhere around August 2011. So, my first question is can I do this? I mean, by the time I apply, my schooling wouldn't be complete.

Here are my class scores from last 3 years.
Class IX = 85%
Class X = 86%
Class XI = 79%

Also, I've been an active in badminton and have represented my school in numerous (50+) badminton tournaments, and won majority of them. I've played badminton at National level for 3 consecutive years..

Other than sports, I've been to other various competitions, and won them.

Next up is my SAT. It was pretty low: 1700. Should I take the SAT again?

Also, some people told me that TOEFL is required, some told only SAT is enough. So, should I take the TOEFL, too?

Quick answer…UMD’s early deadline for admissions is usually around November 1. Most US schools have fall deadlines for early submissions of applications. They won’t start reviewing apps until the first deadline has passed. Some US schools have “rolling admissions”, such that they will consider each application as they receive it. UMD is not one of those. You won’t get a decision back until the January/February timeframe.

I don’t know about the TOEFL. If UMD doesn’t require it, I’m sure there are other US schools that do. From your posting, it sounds like your English is strong, so you should do fine; however, I would suggest looking at a preparation book for any added pointers they give.

I would suggest that you retake the SAT, spending some time beforehand focusing and studying in the areas that you had problems with before on the test. UMD is very numbers focused, and the SAT is quite important. They really only look at the CR and M sections, so focus on those.

UMD has a strong computer sciences program—good luck!!!

R u an international student in India now?..U should definitely take the Toefl…ignore astro…your english needs improvement and anyway, one post isn’t representative of your english ability. After studying english grammar and vocabulary in depth over the summer and retake the SAT as well - you should at least have 700, ideally 750, in math and above 650 in both CR and writing…If you have above a 2100 (meaning 700 in each), then you will do well on the Toefl as well. Those percentages for your grades were based on the Indian standard, right? You should explain about indian %s being much more difficult to attain than american grades in your applications.

I guess I wasn’t very clear; I do also think you should take the TOEFL. (Even if UMD doesn’t require it, other places where you apply will require it). Spend some time with SAT study materials and look here on CC–I think the Xiggi’s guide to the SAT thread is still on here and has some great ideas.

Just make sure your application is complete and all materials submitted to UMD by the priority deadline of Nov 1.
