Letters of Rec: I think they'll be good. I want one from my math/CS teacher which will be nice. History teacher's will be really good. And I'm hoping to get one from the administrators of my internship/job.

Essay: They will be good. Above average, I can't guarantee spectacular!

So... Chance me please!!!

Your gpa is going to hurt you, but to make up for that problem, your essays have to be spectacular (average won’t get you in because the “average computer engineering applicant” will have a higher gpa than you and will be striving toward essays that get them noticed). Go to the bookstore and see what a spectacular college essay looks like.

Hmmm alright I guess thats the goal. I’ll be spending most of my essay-writing time on this college. Thanks!

UIUC does not accept recommendations as part of the application. They will not look at them. Admission is based completely on gpa, class rank, test scores, and the essays that you write.

Also, be sure to apply by the Priority deadline. It will give you a slight advantage.

The weakness in my son’s application was his SAT scores. He was only willing to take the test one time (junior year). He would not take it during senior year even though he knew his score (which was 1970) was at the low end of the range of scores that are typically admitted to Engineering. I am pretty sure that my son got in because he had excellent essays and because he applied by the priority deadline. (He was not waitlisted or deferred.)

My son is a sophomore this year, doing well, and loving it.

Good luck. I wish you the best.

Wow that’s great, I’ll definitely apply early. Thanks!

You may also want to look at the other 2 computer science programs in LAS.

Bill, He’ll automatically be considered for alternate similar programs if he is not directly admitted to his first choice. No reason not to try.
