Hello, thanks for reading this.
I am applying to Texas by the end of the week and would like to get an idea about my chances.
I know I can at least get cap'd but I would like to get in the first time. Here is my info:

Major of choice: Computer Science
Second choice major: Don't know yet.

Instate.
Regular public high school
Ethnicity: Caucasian

Rank: 102/577 (17%)
GPA: UW: 3.55 W: 4.091

SAT: 1740 (around a 1200 - 1250 for c.r. and math)
I retook it this month and definitely plan to see a higher score (at least an 1850 as I actually studied, did testmasters etc.)
So as another question, what would be some decent scores to see when I receive them based on my other stats?

Job experience: Worked as a car detailer at an auto body shop in Austin (summers of 07 and 08)

Special Circumstances:
Single parent (deceased father)

Letters of Recommendation:
My computer science teacher who knows and likes me a lot and will write a very personal and sincere letter.
A alumni and former member of the board of trustees at U.T. whom I interviewed.

As far as I know, they are still doing CAP, what they’re not doing is the summer program.

As for your chances, get your scores up, write killer essays, maybe, it’s going to depend on how many 10%ers take the spots and how competitive your major choices are.

I can only tell you what they told us at the engineering admissions thing, so it may not apply for computer science. They said they only look at math and english, and REALLY focus on the math score, in fact will look at the test that has the best math score even if the composite is lower. They said they accept first the top rank people, then the people with scores over 1470 math/english (or ACT equiv. which they change to SAT score based on the graph on college board), then they start looking at the other apps.

With your rank, your best bet is to get your scores up, but like I said, this was for engineering, so maybe somebody from computer science would know better what they’re looking for, but I would think that your math score would be important.

One quick question please.
How much will a deceased parent help my app (as bad as that sounds…)
I wrote about how my father committed suicide in my topic c and my rec wrote a little on this too.
My mom says this will help a lot. Honestly will they even really care that much?

I think that if you are borderline, and your essays are not only written well, but are compelling and explain why you have had some hardships (which having a parent commit suicide - I’m so sorry! would certainly be), it would only help your application.
