I'm planning to do bus. admin (minor in acct) =/ doubt I'll get into Berk/USC; what other places out there are good for bus. admin anyway (in cali) T^T

GRADES:

GPA (weighted): sophomore+junior = 3.84/(3.89 including freshman year)

-Freshman: 4.0 (3 honors: english, alg2, bio) -- but i dont think this matters much =|
-Sophomore: 3.83 (3 honors+1 AP: eng, trig/pre-calc, chem, world history ap)
-Junior: 3.85 (2 AP: calc ab, bio)
-Senior (currently): 4.4 (2 AP: eng, psych)/I plan to keep my gpa this way

Class is out of ~750 people; I think I'm around top 60..

SCORES:

-SAT1: 430 CR TT_TT, 630 writing, 640 math (planning to retake in nov. to get ~600 on CR)
-SAT2: 570 bio; i have yet to take math2, but i estimate it will be around 600 (retaking both soon)
-AP's: bio, calc, whap: all 3's =| LOL

EC's:

-4 years orchestra
-2 years badminton (1 year JV)
-3 years service club (100hrs+)
-3 years chinese culture club (2 years president, 1 year VP)

Your SAT scores are below average. Your chances are not looking too great imho.

As an fyi, you cannot major in business admin and minor in accounting at the same time, since you can specialize in accounting already while in business admin.

if you’re looking into accounting, i would apply to UCSB as well, since a lot of their accounting grads move onto work for the big 4.

as for business, uci and cal probably have the best undergrad programs for business as of now.

i believe its either pepperdine or occidental college that also have great undergrad business programs.

Well, I got in with a 1460 SAT score. SATII: Math2:610 English:550 and U.S.History:500
3.80 weighted senior year. Either I got lucky or I wrote one hell of a personal statement (judging from my scores; not likely) or my Extra Curricular was there.

I got in with a 1450 SAT score. SAT II: World History-600 Japanese-420. My overall weighted GPA was 4.0. I had a lot of ECs, but none of them were long term. However, I did various ECs, which showed how well-rounded I was. My personal statements were alright. For the first one, I talked about how my metro trips in LA influenced me to become involved in the community. For the second one, I talked about how my singing performance in China influenced me to become aware of different cultures. Try to show how well rounded you are because academics aren’t everything…

thanks guys! i’m gonna work hard on those personal statements and i’ll try to raise up those SAT scores first >< since usc and berk are out of reach, i’m definitely going to apply to uci, ucsb for accounting, ucr and maybe occidental. which other liberal arts are good for business? =O

if you’re really interested in doing business and accounting, consider the CSUs. CSU fullerton is fairly close to irvine and probably has a much better business/accounting program then UCI.

business admin program here at irvine are pretty difficult to get in… we currently have 78 freshmen out of the 4000+ people who applied.
but my sat scores weren’t too good either. so no need to be discouraged.
work hard on your essays! because a lot of the people who read my essays afterwards tells me that my essay probably covered up my gpa and test scores :]

if youre interested in working in S. Cali, particularly in the OC area, more people have been to CSU fullerton (including the business program). CSUF actually had so many students in their business program, they opened up an Irvine campus which offers predominately business classes and to cater to S. OC residents.

UCI’s undergraduate program just doesn’t have sufficient resources. If they did, they would be enrolling way more students in their undergraduate business program. As it stands, you have to compete very heavily to the bus major, plus you still have to compete (somewhat) for the various minors. No other school (except engr) is impacted and will turn away qualified students. Even engr, i tihnk is mostly cause kids are boarderline. I haven’t heard of any 3.7 GPA students getting turned away from a major in engr, but plenty of 2.7 kids getting turned away…
the business program can’t handle the number of students. thats why so many kids take biz econ as a fall back position.
CSUF has been highly well known in South OC for two things- business and teaching programs.

And purely from what i’ve noticed as an Irvine resident even before i went to UCI, far more people have ties to CSU fullerton then from UC Irvine. I’ve seen plenty of CSUF MBA grads but actually haven’t met a single UCI MBA grad in industry. I’m sure they’re out there. But I’m not a well-connected business person, so take that with a grain of salt.

Its mostly due to the fact that the undergrad business admin major is so new, only 2-3 years since it was implemented?

My guess is that it is competitive right now not only because of its novelty, but as you mentioned, its lack of resources which is DUE to its novelty… the major will grow in time, and my guess is that the program(s) should surpass those of CSUF.

Keep in mind that the Merage school is actually pretty achieved, it is ranked within the top 30-40 business schools in the nation, and top 70-80 in the world on US News.

I don’t know too much about the CSUF undergrad or grad business prog(s), but its not even ranked.

I have heard good things about the csuf undergrad business prog, but i would go to uci if i get accepted to the business admin major.

Fullerton DOES have a more established program and it’s very solid…

that said, Fullerton is also:
insanely impacted
unheard of anywhere outside of Orange County
full of idiots(mostly the ones who couldn’t get into CSULB)

UCI’s business program is rather new, but it’s already ranking nationally. CSUF’s isn’t even on the radar. That said, it’s very competitive in terms of getting into UCI Merage. You might have to settle for majoring in Business Economics and aiming for the accounting minor if you go to UCI.

if you do get in, don’t worry about minoring, they offer a Bus Admin w/ emphasis on Accounting program which should be fine for getting your CPA.

Also consider UCSB, they offer an Economics and Accounting major and UCLA offers Business Economics which is effectively Econ+Accounting.

also remember that if you don’t get in where you want right out, you can go to a community college. If you plan things out well, you can take courses over the summer. Take the AP tests for BOTH micro AND microeconomics. do whatever you can to get a bunch of AP units. If you pass 8 AP tests, you should end up with around 24 semester units of college credit. Take 6 units over the summer at a CC. Then schedule roughly 15 units in each term for the next two semesters at a CC. You can apply in November. If you got As in you summer courses and do well in your first semester, you can transfer to a UC as an upper classman almost guaranteed. I did.
