Chance me please! Would be greatly appreciated.

UMD is my absolute top choice in school, and I'm beyond nervous about my application.

Northern New Jersey
African American + Caucasion

GPA [Weighted]: 3.08
Entirely due to my Junior year and the contribution of an F in an honors class. Poor performance in Junior year due to very serious home issues discussed at length in essays. Currently recovering back to As and Bs throughout now that the issue is relatively under control.

Throughout Freshmen to Junior Year, mostly honors classes, 2 APs, 2 additional AP tests taken and self studied for.

AP English 11: 5 [Self]
AP CompSci: 5
AP USH: 4 [Self]
AP Stat: 4

SAT: 2200 combined
Math:700
CR:750
W:750

-Passionate Model U.N member all 4 years, president for last two, led club and team to victory for 6th year in a row at competitive conference. Won 7 First place awards competing in Model UN, some at large invitational conferences.

-Writer extracurricularly, won several awards for writing, such as VFW VoD County Level, Scholastic Art and Writing Awards.
-Many other clubs and efforts of significance but pretty much just the student government deal
-I've got a creative writing/design portfolio site set up for my applications that I update pretty often

My essays and reccs are solid, I've visited UMD about 3 times, maintained constant if not borderline annoying contact with my area rep.

I'm currently debating whether or not I want to bus the 4.5 hours down there to deliver my current year grades and speak to a counselor and express extreme interest.

I'm in love with the school, and considering admissions day is 7 days away, I can't stop thinking about it. I'd appreciate advice on my current situation, it's just I'm not sure if anything I do can even make a difference at this point.

Thanks in advance.

I think you’re going to be okay… I think you have a great chance! Its great that you discussed those issues in your essay.
Would you chance me back? I have a thread going already. Thanks and good luck! Don’t stress

update/bump: took the trip last Friday, drove down 5 hours in a suit and tie, sat down with a few admissions reps in the office and just told them how it was and delivered my current year grades that form an upward trend. Admissions seemed into the idea, but as always with them they don’t give out too many vibes to ride on. Just a polite 'you did the right thing bringing this to our attention, thanks for making the effort.

@Booter, you’re solid, SAT a little lacking, but if you’ve put soul into the app and essay you’re in no doubt.

if anyone else feels like chancing me I’d still appreciate it <3 hard to get sleep

The fact that you went down to the Admissions just for them to hear your case; I’d be shocked if they didn’t accept you.

Haha I did feel kind of ballsy just telling them I drove five hours, the looks I got were pretty funny. No guarantees though I’m just glad I did everything I could, thanks for the support though I feel a bit more at ease! Good luck to you man hopefully we’re all bouncing off the walls tomorrow

I think you have a great chance… upward trend is awesome, you’re minority and your SATs are incredible. The essays explaining your junior year will certainly not go unnoticed and I think you are in without a second thought!
