Chance me, please!

Gender: Male
Ethnicity: Asian (1st in my household to go to university in the USA)
GPA: ~3.9 (UW) / ~4.64 (W)
Rank: 8/225 (top 5%)
SAT: 2010 (math 700, reading 630, writing 680, 9 on essay)
Major: Biology or Nursing
School: In-State Public

AP Classes

AP Biology: 5

AP Language and Composition: 5
So far, the only other core classes have been honors classes... I've never gotten lower than a 97 in any other class, though. My school doesn't really have too many AP classes offered for freshmen and sophomores, and those two are the only ones offered last year...

Senior Schedule

AP Calculus AB (two semester course)

AP Psychology

AP US Government

AP Literature

Anatomy and Physiology Honors

Medical Sciences 2 Honors
So far, my lowest average is a 96, but I'm already working on ways to raise that. I'm pretty much taking all the AP classes offered at my school; the only other APs offered that I am unable to take are Calculus BC and Computer Science. I could've taken U.S. History AP, but I never signed up for that.

Awards, Extra Curriculars, and Community Service (This worries me...)

HOSA Treasurer (I'm running for regional office this fall.)

HOSA Regional/State Competition Participant

National Honors Society

Junior Marshal in 2011

Beta Club

I'm going to be a member of the track and field team next spring.

Occasional volunteer at a local nursing home the past 6 years

School Nominee as a freshman for entrance into NC School of Science/Math

Nominee for Governor's School in 2010

Invited to UNC Project Uplift, but declined last minute

Occasional Participation with Church Youth Group

Special Olympics Helper (2011 and 2012)

I have earned school academic awards for earning the highest grades in the following classes: Health Team Relations, Biomedical Sciences, English I and II Honors, English 3 AP, Biology Honors, Chemistry Honors, Geometry Honors, Algebra II Honors, Pre-Calculus, World History Honors, Civics/Economics Honors, and U.S. History Honors.

I'm scheduled to do about 40 hours of job shadowing this winter.

AP Awards
My school doesn't really offer too many clubs... Outside of HOSA, the International Club, the Do Something club (community service), and the FFA chapter, there are really no other clubs available.

Essay 1 - Class disparities in less developed countries around the world
Essay 2 - Still thinking; I really want my "latest discovery" in life to be more unique...

And one question while I'm here, I'm applying for the October 15th deadline to UNC, but I REALLY want to increase my SAT; I know I can do so, but I missed today's SAT... If I've already applied, can I still take the November SAT and get those scores considered too? I would just opt for regular decision, but I want to apply by the 15th to be considered for merit-based scholarships.

With you being in-state North Carolina, what makes you think you wouldn’t get in with your resume?

Like what abdul said, you have an excellent chance in getting in. I don’t know why you even need people to chance you, you’re deny proof! If you were an OOS applicant I would argue otherwise, but you are not! You have so many pluses in your resume. One is that you are a first generation college, asian student. Congrats!

Well, out of the top 25 people in my school, it seems like almost every one of us is applying for Chapel Hill. My extracirriculars seem kinda weak, I mean I’m the treasurer of both HOSA and Beta Club at my school, but it still worries me somewhat. I mean, I’ve volunteered at the local nursing home the past 6 years, but I really haven’t done too much of that so far this school year, and I’ve never had a job. Whenever I look at some of the other “chance me” posts on here, some of them have more complete backgrounds than I do…

I honestly just don’t know too much about the admissions process. Getting into UNC would just be great on so many levels. The campus is great, I’m a UNC fan, and I don’t mind taking a 30 minute bus to NCSU or driving an hour and a half back home so I can keep in touch with so many people. I don’t know, I guess I’m just worrying a little too much about it…

Anyway, thanks for the positive comments! What are my chances for merit scholarships? I know that in-state tuition’s already decent, but it wouldn’t hurt… I also forgot to mention that I’m taking the SAT again in November. I’m definitely sure that I can improve my CR and math scores on that.

I’m beginning to think there is a character flaw with these posts. Self-promotion.

Anyway, if the top 25 are all applying, what rank do will you be at? And as far as ethnicity is concerned, being Far Eastern/Indian isn’t in the same realm as black/hispanic.

I don’t think you need it, but good luck and let us know what happens.

I wouldn’t plan for merit aid. My DD’s stats were similar. Her weighted GPA was a little higher and her SATs were higher. Similar AP classes, grades and scores. Lots of EC’s. Class rank 5 out of 522. No merit aid offered.

I believe a link had been posted here earlier which said that approximately 130 incoming freshman out of 4000 had received some sort of merit aid. It’s tough to come by.

I think you have a good shot but low chance of merit aid. You wouldn’t qualify for financial aid? UNC is usually great with need-based aid.

What are the back-up schools to which you’re applying? You might be going to one of those.

Well, after what you all are saying and after talking with my teachers and counselors, I guess I’m not really too worried about getting in, I was probably just more curious about the merit aid…

Anyway, to the last poster, my backups are UNC Wilmington, NC State, and UNC Greensboro. I’m also applying to Wake just to see what happens, but I’m already pretty sure that I’ll get into at least one of these schools. Thanks for the feedback, though, everyone!
