I'm applying in the next few weeks for regular decision. I'm pretty sure I'll be admitted, but what are my chances for merit aid and scholarships? I'm not familiar at all with the whole merit aid process, so I'm not sure what I can qualify for at UNC that can help with my tuition. Outside of the Pogue and Robertson, are there really many merit scholarships available for someone like me?

It's just that my dad's making the cost of in-state tuition, room, and board seem like the end of the world, so I want to know what I might qualify for that can help out a bit. I hate that I missed the Early Action and Pogue deadline, but I thought that I could write better essays if I had more time...

I’m like 99.999% sure you’ll be admitted. Merit aid is ridiculously hard to get, though. Last year, they gave 140 merit scholarships, and the incoming class was almost 4,000 students. You certainly have a shot, but the math doesn’t look good.

Have you checked into need-based aid, though? You might be surprised, UNC is often pretty generous…

Doubtful you’ll find a school that is cheaper, academically stronger, and that you can get into. You never know though.
