Hey everyone,
I am wondering what my chances of getting in are and what I can do to improve them.
I am currently a Junior.

EC: Beta Club, NHS, NHS in Science, NHS in Spanish, Varsity Cross Country, Varsity Track, Varsity Math Team, Instructables Club (Co-founder and officer), Medical Society, Volunteer at a local hospital, Volunteer at a local charity (President of Junior Executive Committee at the charity; led committee in organizing annual easter egg hunt for more than 150 Foster Children for 3 years in a row)

What should I do to improve my chances?

Looks fine. Really good chances.

The interview is important. Schedule interviews at other schools before the Vandy interview to help you become more comfortable with the process.

Try to get your rank off your transcript;

if my memory serves me correctly, Vandy reports class rank for those who submit and the large majority was top 10% and by now could be top 5%…

The interview isn’t really important at all…

I’m not an insider but I do believe optional interviews are not optional. Vandy says they can help but not hurt. I wish I could find a stock with that deal. I don’t know how Vandy uses the interviews but if I worked on the admission committee at Vandy I would:
*have more qualified students than open spots to give out.
*want to use my selections to pick students that wanted to come to Vandy
*if a kid did not sign up for an interview I would hear the message he was sending
*if a kid drove 2 hours to a 30 minute interview then drove 2 hours home that would send a loud and clear message to me
*the alumni doing the interviews would be selected by me to be my eyes and ears in the field
*when I visited their town I would take them to lunch and to play golf
*their word would mean a lot to me and if they called me up to tell me about a great student they interviewed that wanted to go to Vanderbilt that kid would be accepted

Thanks for all the replies! As far as interviews go, my dad’s friend from business school is an alum and does interviews. He offered to do mine so that should definitely help me out I just hope it helps a lot.

Optional interviews are optional. If you do one, an alum submits an interview summary/report. If you don’t,there just isn’t a interview report. Not doing it will not hurt. Doing it could be helpful if the alum finds you particularly interesting/sociable, but even then, it’s still just an interview summary that attaches to the application. There’s an entire application in front of it to read and review.

Thank you all for the replies. I know that my class rank is a major weak point in my resume, do you think it will basically eliminate me from having a possibility of getting in?

Top 15% at the top school in your state is probably equivalent of top 5% anywhere else. Don’t worry about it.
