Thanks!!

And what are some ways to show interest ( especially lehigh)? I cant do ED tho because i need aid

garciac -

Your GPA is fine, it’s not high nor it is low for Lehigh. The upward trend is very good and is almost as important as the GPA itself, so good job there. A 3.18 GPA freshman year will not kill you. I also had a rather low freshman GPA, too, by the way.

Your academic rigor seems to be decent. It’s good that you took an AP class, but are you going to be taking anymore? I would highly recommend you take more than 1 AP senior year so that not only will your GPA be rising, but so will the rigor of your schedule. It’s important to show that as you matured and progressed throughout HS you also took more difficult classes.

Your SAT scores place you at about the 50th percentile, meaning half of admitted students had higher and half had lower scores. This is a decent spot to be in. Your SAT II scores are also decent scores and your ACT is 1 point above average. All in all, you are right at or right above the middle of admitted students, so you should be fine in that regard.

AP scores hold little to no bearing on admissions, so while that 5 is great, it’s not much of a boost.

For the most part, your extracurriculars are good. The service trip may or may not be a plus, depending on the context. If it was an expensive, short term school trip, it will hold little influence. However, if you were heavily involved or stayed for an extended period of time, it might be a good EC to expand on. Also, it’s great that you have work experience. Colleges love to see work experience, and depending on how much you worked, it could be a great alternative to having many ECs.

To answer your questions: I would send both ACT and SAT. If you only want to send one, I’d go with ACT since its slightly better. And yes, do send those SAT IIs.

Since this is a Lehigh forum, I will only chance you on Lehigh :)

Honestly, I think you have slightly higher than average chances. I would call it a high match (between match and low reach). The best way to increase your chances at this point would be to show interest. Which leads me into your next question…

The best way to show interest would be to email your admissions counselor at Lehigh (find yours here: [Lehigh University: Undergraduate Admissions: Contact Admissions](Contact Us & Find Your Admissions Counselor | Lehigh University) ) and to visit the campus. Also, you can interview. The interview process is more of an informational session rather than evaluative. While they will submit some information about the interview, it is really just a way for you to ask questions and learn more about the school.

Finally, about ED. If you apply to a school under their ED agreement, you can in fact back out if the aid is not enough. So, it may not be totally out of the question for you to do so. Applying ED would give you a significantly higher chance of acceptance (probably a match rather than a higher match).

Regardless of what you decide, you have some fantastic schools on that list and I’m sure you’ll be happy at any of those places (although happiest at Lehigh)!

Best of luck,

 • Mike

(I’m so sorry I wrote so much!! I didn’t realize it until I submitted this…)

Wow thank you so much that was awesome. I do plan on taking AP physics and AP macro next year. I may take AP Bio also but idk if it will be too much for me. Ill be in calc H and others honors classes with that. Also if i were to retake my SAT and ACT what should i be aiming for? I heard a good act helps make an okay gpa look better so should i focus mainly on the ACT? Thanks again

Bump for anyone else?

Well, the ACT and SAT are different styles of tests. Do again which ever one you felt more comfortable with (probably ACT since you scored higher). A very competitive SAT would be a high 1300 to a low 1400 (Lehigh doesn’t take into consideration the writing score) and a very competitive ACT would be a 32.

Do which ever and how ever many APs you can handle. Don’t overload your senior year just to impress colleges. Having taken a more difficult schedule each year, you should be fine!

Hopefully someone else will help you, too, so I am not the only one :)

Best of luck, hopefully we will be the class of 2017!

 • Mike

Bumpppppppppp

garciac,

If you’re looking for my opinion, I say take every AP you can. I think you should try to do AP Bio in addition to AP Macro and AP Physics. Mike (Lehigh2017) may be right about being cautious in overloading, but I do think that Lehigh will look at what you could have done. They’ll see that you had the option to try AP Bio but you decided not to. You should always try to challenge yourself - that’s something Lehigh looks for.

If you think that’s a tough courseload, I took AP Calc, AP Physics, AP Chem, and AP English my senior year - it’s definitely doable. My sister’s senior courseload for this year entails AP Calc, AP Physics, AP Bio, and AP Psych. She took AP Macro last year, hated it (because she’s got the mind of an engineer), but she still got a 4.

Look online for the Class of 2016 profile for what your scores should be. Aim for the general average - Lehigh won’t count you out just for a bad score, they look at everything.

Best,

Thanks mike. Im probaby gunna end up taking the third AP but i have the option of it being Stat or bio. Also, the third ap would be my seventh class which is newly allowed to seniors in our school so a lot of people arent taking 7 because they do not think its necessary. This is why i was on the fence about choosing a seventh course. Anyway thank you lots for helping!

Bumppppppppp

Unfortunately there is no one who frequents this site who can say if you will or will not be accepted. Mike and Mike have offered only their advice and opinion. But college admissions is a very squishy, uncertain thing…but do wish you the best of luck!

I see what youre saying and thankyou. I have one final question as to where to apply with lehigh. Is the college if engineering harder to get into than the regular arts and sciences school?

Hi garciac,

In terms of just raw data, Lehigh’s P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science (RCEAS) is statistically more difficult to get into as opposed to Lehigh’s College of Arts and Sciences (CAS).

The RCEAS is a highly ranked engineering program that is very well-established and recognized. Lehigh was founded as an engineering school, and engineering remains its dominant field of study. Some CAS programs are becoming more well-known, but statistically, CAS students have slightly lower stats compared to RCEAS students. Of course, as a ChE engineering student, my view is slanted, but RCEAS is generally more advanced and more competitive than other CAS programs.

However - and this is important - do not pick major or the college you apply to based solely on how likely you would get into a certain program. CAS and RCEAS majors are almost nothing alike, so pick a major you feel passionate about first, and then apply to your various schools. Don’t try to play the system - Lehigh sees through that.

Best,

Mike

So in that case how would i chance now? Either as an ED or RD please. Thanks for all your help on this you really know you’re stuff.

Ps. So going in and majoring in physics then trying to transfer into engineering wouldn’t work out well?

Bumpppppooo

Hey garciac,

Like I said, don’t apply to CAS instead of RCEAS just because of the relative odds. If you really want to be an engineer, apply to our engineering college - simple as that. Of course, transfers like that are possible, and some students do transfer. However, they transfer because they genuinely changed their minds, not because they wanted to slip through the system.

Your stats are good enough to have a decent chance for both ED and RD. If you’re willing to make the binding ED committment to attend Lehigh, that of course increases your chances. But be sure of your decision to do ED.

Best,

Haha I looked at ur thread and saw that we did have similar circumstances. I personally think you take as many APs as you can handle, write good essays and visit the school too. Hey by the time its end of all fall ull b done with college apps and so will I. Just gotta relax and take everything day by day. Good luck with everything and hopefully we can both b part of Lehigh class of 2017

Any updates? Bumppo

Update: got a 33 act. Should i still submit sats? How do i look

garciac,

That’s a good ACT score. And your SATs are good too, so I would submit both to Lehigh. Admissions takes a hollistic approach and considers everything, and since the ACT focuses more on science/math and the SAT focuses more on English, both definitely help you out.

Best,

Pretty much guaranteed a B+ for calc H class. Couldnt take ap calc because i didnt take the right pre req class. So how much does a B+ in a calc class subpar to ap calc hurt me as far as engineering goes?
