Additional comment:

I was doing really well in school until this summer and got a D in my first O chem class. I retook in the fall semester and got an A. However, I also withdrew from two major pre-req classes during fall semester: calculus 2 and second part of physics with calculus. I am not sure how UCs are going to look at this... because I have all A's in my other courses until this summer, and I kinda screwed up the summer and the fall semester! but my GPA is kinda good considering my major.

Another thing that bothers me is that I have 1 D, 1 F, and 4 Ws
I got an F from my English class when I first started college but I retook it and got an A. I didn't even have to take that class b/c I had AP credit for it.

They might not accept that D. Make sure you will still have the 60 units and make sure it does not conflict with IGETC. The w’s won’t hurt you at all. With that GPA, you should be good to go everywhere.

I didn’t explain my D and F, since I retook those classes and got As. I only explained the 2 Ws I had in the recent fall semester in the additional comment. I didn’t want to go on and on about my excuses… or should I have explained every single bad grade in the additional comment?

@mermaker:

Thank you. Yes, I already have 75 units excluding winter and spring semester and got my IGETC completed. The thing is that I had 2 Ws in this fall semester (dropped out 2 classes out of 4) and those are my pre-req courses and one of them is calc 2! I am going to take those classes in winter and spring but idk… I feel like I screwed up 3 years of my hard work because of this fall semester… :(

Your stats are great, but those W’s and the D and F make it difficult to even guess what going to happen. There isn’t good advice here, or anywhere else for that matter, regarding how W’s, F’s, and make-ups affect transfer when you are otherwise a strong candidate. This is why I waited an additional year to TAG, just as a safety precaution.

I’m in a similar boat, except I made the mistake of trying to explain my situation in the additional comment section. The reason I call it a mistake is because I didn’t go into specific detail as to why there were blemishes in my academic record and it really should have been in the personal statement. I’m slightly freaking out that the reviewers will be annoyed that I did something they highly advise against doing (I didn’t know it at the time).

Short story: I overloaded one semester while taking architecture studio courses (most students take at the most 3 courses while in studio at my cc) and I ended up dropping 3 classes out of the 5 I was taking. Since I’ve made up all the classes I’ve received a W or F (the 3 w’s in that one semester and one F in a non-major course that I chose to fail after the drop deadline) with A’s.

Other than that, I have a 3.84 gpa with 80+ units. I switched majors from Architecture to Art History with a dual major in Political Science so that’s the reason I’ve have more units that most.
Major gpa is 4.0 (it’s art history so it’s not like that’s impressive) and I have a couple awards from my cc.
ECs- Eagle Scout, Museum Docent, Model UN member, AGS honor society- committee chair, political strategy internship
Applying from PCC
Personal Statements- Don’t feel they are as strong as they could have been.
Applying to Berkeley, UCLA, UCI, UCSC, UCSB (TAG), and UCSD (for poli sci)

I really want to go to UCSB because they have a strong art history program with an architectural concentration and it’s the perfect distance from LA. If by some miracle I get into Cal and UCLA, I might reconsider UCSB
