Chance Me Please

Hi I am a Cupertino High School student from grade 10-12. I attended an international school in grade 9. I am Korean, Japanese and Chinese.

U/W GPA A-G: 3.92
Weighted GPA A-G: 4.35

SAT Score: 2300
M: 800, CR: 720, W: 780

SAT II Scores:
Chemistry: 790
Math Level 2: 800
Planning to take Literature soon

AP Scores:
Chemistry: 4
Calculus BC: 5
Planning to take: Japanese, Physics E/M and M, Statistics, and English Literature and Composition

Major: Chemical Engineering

ECs, Stuff I've done: I am not a very strong individual in terms of volunteering or school clubs. I have more work experience.

School Activities/Volunteer Services:
Japanese National Honor Society: Participated in many volunteering events through my junior year and I am an officer this year.

Bunkasai Festival: A festival I helped organize by being part of a committee. I oversaw poster setup and design. I was in charge of running some game booths. All proceeds were donated towards the Philippines (earthquake).

Various Key Club and International Club volunteer events.

Educational Programs:
Reischauer Scholars Program: A program hosted by Stanford EPGY and Stanford SPICE. It's an online class that spanned over a semester where I interacted with 30 other students from all over the nation through video classrooms and discussion forums. Every week we talked with a different professor from universities like Harvard and Yale to talk about Japanese culture, history, and modern relations. At the end I wrote a 10 page research paper that was published with everyone else's and distributed to the Stanford community. Our papers were praised as undergrad student level papers.

NOTE: The Reischauer Scholars Program is considered very difficult to get in. Only 30~ students are admitted.

Sports:
I have done Junior Varsity Swimming in 10th grade and competed in district wide events. This year, 12th grade, I am doing Varsity Swimming.

Internships/Jobs:

IFSS (Inspiring Future Scientists through Shadowing): An internship at Stanford where I helped a Chemistry Grad student in his research for a few weeks. I got to learn a lot about lab safety, meticulous procedures, and the science behind many of his experiments.

TOBI: I worked at a factory for a while in South San Francisco. It was an interesting experience and allowed me to glean insight into the industrial infrastructure and management.

Bakery: I worked for half a year at a bakery during 11th grade. It was a tedious job and helped grow my communication skills through my interactions with customers. I did lots of odd jobs but I mostly managed the front and register. I learned many valuable skills.

Private Tutoring: I started Private tutoring during the summer of my 12th grade. To date I have tutored over 15 people in a variety of subjects ranging from elementary school common core level to AP Calculus.

Private Tutoring Business: After a while I started receiving more tutoring requests than I could handle so me and 3 other seniors started up a tutoring business. It has been an extraordinary experience learning about business organization, management and advertisement. I continue to gain lots of experience from this venture. To date we tutor over 30 students in a variety of subjects and our staff is composed of 14 tutors, all highschoolers to promote our mission goal of providing tutors that are up to date and relatable through experience.

Essays: My UC1+2 and Common App are very strong and have received praised from admission officers, grad students, and professors.

Hooks: My mother went to Berkeley and Stanford.

Other info:
My Letters of Recommendation are very strong, (one from Chem AP teacher and the other from my Japanese teacher). Both teachers know me very well and I have shared significant experiences with them both. Especially my Japanese teacher. My Counselor Letter of Rec is also very strong.

Stanford is my number one school I would like to go to.

Schools I am applying to:
UC Berkeley
UCLA
UC San Diego
UC Davis
UC Santa Barbara
UC Irvine

Harvard
Stanford
Penn
Princeton
Yale
MIT

Please chance me. Thanks.

Impressive objective stats. Although admissions for ivies can be unpredicatable, i think numbers wise you look good. I’d still say those ivies+stanford and MIT are reach. Those schools are reach for anyone, even with great numbers. You seem to be very math/science oriented. Are you also doing AP english/history classes? Please chance me back if you can.

This is my first time chancing someone so I apologize if my remarks are erroneous/ otherwise ignorant!

As far as stats go, very nice; all good except a 4 on AP Chem which may be more apparent while applying as a ChemE major. There’s an interesting focus on Japanese heritage and science that will make you stand out.
I would say low-high match for the UCs depending on which UC. For the Ivies+MIT, all I can say is that you’re a qualified applicant.

Thanks @dragon97‌ , Yes I am very math/science oriented but I also have a deep passion for fine arts as well. I have done some art pieces but unfortunately they are not portfolio material. In terms of english and history, I have taken American Literature Honors and am currently taking AP English Literature and Composition. I like to read but my writing isn’t my strongest suit which is why I took these classes in hopes of improving them. For history I dropped APUSH due to a bad teacher and time management. I will chance you back!

Some extra information:

My UC GPA is 4.25 according to RogerHub

I forgot to mention that I have been volunteer tutoring at my school for the past three years. I have helped students in my school struggling in subjects like Geometry.

@apfizzix You have a decent shot at all UCs if you are a full payIng OOS.The rest are reaches and unpredictable for anyone. Due to your scores, you are a competitive applicant in all the schools.
