GPA: 4.11
AP's: US History-5, Calc BC-3 (ABsub-4), Latin IV-2 I'm currently taking AP Biology, Gov, Lit, and Statistics

SATs: 1990 (700-reading, 670-math, 620-writing), took them again in Nov, writing will go up
SATII's: 760-Math 2, 750-Lit, 740-US History

EC's: Symph Band, Marching Band, student and TA at an Eritrean Language School, President of Model UN, co-chair of Young Democrats, NHS, organized and canvassed for Obama campaign, interned at the Dept. of Treasury-Office of Comptroller of Currency

Nat'l Achievement Semi-Finalist, 2007 VA Boys State Delegate and councilman

I'm an African American, my mother comes from Eritrea, my Eritrean identity is a subject of my essay, I also come from a low-income family

Should I submit my AP scores (I either submit them all or none). How bad is the 2 in Latin?

Go ahead and submit your AP scores. Obviously Latin isn't your strong suit, but I don't think it will count against you, and you want colleges to know about your US History score.

I think you look like a viable candidate. Good luck!

I think that your SAT's could very much hurt you.
Also, the EC's which you named didn't seem too prestigious. I haven't heard of them really.

The Eritrea background is interesting, but I do think that the AP scores could also be a detriment since you have only taken a few and you didn't get all 5's.

I know that Harvard doesn't care much for SAT scores, but study as hard as humanly possible and retake them if you really want a shot.

I'd say its a high reach, so you should probably consider more schools.

you guys are honest to the point of insensitivity. The fact of the matter is, Harvard looks for interesting individuals from different ethnic backgrounds, NOT just SAT perfect score-obsessed asians, which I'm sure occupy about 99% of this website.

That's not true. I think the whole board would be satisfied with 2000+, and most applicants in this section would be quite content with 2200+. Don't make such ignorant statements because that's offensive to 99% of the website, who don't have a perfect score and don't care for one either.

An0maly, I don't think that we are being disrespectful towards anyone or denigrating their scores. We are just following what the scores in general of people who got in.

From what I have seen at Harvard, there are no perfect scores (that I know of anyway).

But, the thing is that if you are seriously considering Harvard, you definitely should shoot for at least a 2300. And yes, there is a big difference between 2200 and 2300.

I am not saying that you will not get in warsai, but I am saying that you should consider retaking the SATs if you want to boost your chances.

I wasn't saying you guys were being disrespectful - you were just being honest, which is really what people want to find when they post their information. I was saying that JuanEatsPandas is wrong for making generalizations like that.

You definitely put this up because you wanted to hear how perfect you were for Harvard. But, its true, the SATs are not up to par. Also, are you on the 4.0 scale or the 5.0? Also, personality is HUGE for Harvard. They want a diverse student body (and they want to escape their "nerd school" label, so if you're interesting, new, fun and can convey that you have social skills, this will definitely work for you. Maybe I'll see you at Harvard's MUN, you should definitely do that

THANK YOU LAXKID91! Someone who finally agrees with me that Harvard looks for more than SAT scores and is looking for interesting people.

Why do you keep making generalizations Juan? Everybody on CC knows that Harvard looks for more than SAT scores. Even in this thread, people have already said:

I know that you come from an "different ethnic background" as well, but it seems like you think that is the only thing Harvard is looking for. Please, be more respectful and less ignorant. Every college looks for interesting people.

Except maybe a requirement that you reach a certain reasonable threshold on your SAT's, but remember that everyone who applies to Harvard has good SAT's.

Most things come down to how they perceive you as an individual and less as a test-taker.

Juan, though I agree that SATs don't mean as much as some people think they are, imposing racial stereotypes is an IGNORANT way to back your argument. Proof? I'm obviously Asian and I'm not counting on godly SAT scores to get me in. I want Harvard to see past them and look at my personality, interests, and aspirations.
Are you applying to Harvard? Well let me take the liberty to judge your chances from your personality.
