Chance me please?

I'm currently a junior with Georgia Tech as my top choice.

GPA: 3.4 (I calculated this myself using GT's scale)

Math classes: AP Calculus BC, Calculus III, Linear Algebra
Science: AP Chemistry, AP Physics Mechanics, Physics II (E&M), etc.
English: AP English Language, Honors American Lit, etc.
Foreign Language: Honors Spanish, etc.
Social Studies: AP USH, etc.

I'm taking AP Econ, AP Gov, AP Spanish Language, Diff Eq., etc., next semester. As you can see, I've taken pretty rigorous courses.

ACT: 35 composite

SAT: 780 M, 670 CR, 770 W

EC: NHS
Founder of a small tutoring organization
Beta club

The thing is, I know my GPA and EC's are weak. I had to quit most of my good EC's (1st chair in hs band, jv tennis team) my freshman year because of a serious hand injury.

What are my chances?
Also, do you think Tech cares whether or not I take a Science class my senior year?
Thanks.

Your GPA is weak, as you know, but you have taken very rigorous courses, done fairly well, and your test scores are very strong for Tech. As for EC’s, you have had three years to make up for that hand injury… Even so, you will probably get in either regular admissions or through the summer program, which requires you to enter in the summer rather than the fall so that Tech doesn’t have to report your GPA in their statistics for the entering class… Make sure you spend some time writing a strong essay, and be sure to pick a safety school just in case.

Thank you for the response. Do you think Tech minds whether or not I take a science class my senior year? Should I apply early notification? I’m not expecting to even get a chance at the psp, but it would be nice to get into Tech earlier just to be safe.

Any1 else willing to answer? Thanks.

You’ve taken a very rigerous courseload so I doubt they will hold your GPA against you. I say your in for regular admission.

Are you in-state or out-of-state?

My neighbor from freshman year was admitted with a 2.9 GPA. He was not a state champion (or anywhere close) in any extracurricular activity. He did take a rigorous course load and had a very high SAT, though.

I’m in-state. Thank you all for the responses, but a few questions remain unanswered. Do you think Tech minds whether or not I take a science class my senior year? Should I apply early notification?

How do you know whether or not to apply for RD or EA?

As long as you have the minimum science requirements, I don’t think they will care whether you go beyond that.

I think you should definitely go for the early application deadline because it’s not binding. Moreover, at least in 2006-2007, you simply had to write two additional essays to be considered for the Presidential Scholarship.

Like fabrizio said, just make sure you have the basic science requirements covered. It doesn’t hurt to apply early/you have nothing to lose, and they no longer require any additional essays to be considered for honors or the PS, but with your EC’s, I wouldn’t be looking at those as options.

Fabrizio: When did your 2.9 friend apply? That is practically unheard of without some sort of special circumstance…

He applied in Fall 2006. Unless he’s kept something hidden from me for three years, I don’t think he had any special achievements while in high school. He did have a very high (close to 2400) SAT, though, and earned fives on every AP test he took. He’s definitely smart, just comically lazy.

I have another question. Do first semester grades of your senior year get factored in at all during the admissions process? Thanks.
