I am an african american male student living in southeastern KY but was born in Cameroon, Africa. I have been accepted into the seminar for african american scholars at ND. My gpa is 4.0 unweighted and around 4.15 weighted. before i graduate, i would have taken 5 AP courses which would have been the maximum available at my high school. I have taken the ACT once and got a 28. 31 in math and English, 29 in science and 22 in reading. I have played varsity basketball all through high school. what are my chances of getting into Brown and any other high profile schools?

Chillax. You have looked around, and put more thought into this question (for you in your specific situation) than any of us here. No one on here is going to be able to guesstimate as well as you are. And frankly, the people who could don’t like giving people “chances” because they know admissions are so dependent on so many unknowable things.

You sound pretty awesome–African-American born in Africa from Kentucky, really great grades. ACT might not be high up there, but it’s all right. If you wrote some awesome essays, you’d be a shoo-in at Brown.

Though yeah B’s a crapshoot and all that and blah blah blah… from what you wrote, you sound like an amazing applicant. Truly.

Thanks. I appreciate it.

@Gadiii: very rarely is a candidate a shoo-in. Even URMs have something around a 15% admission rate now, which is less than the overall rate in 2004 (for the class of 2008), and only 2% off my class’ admit rate. One of the applicants from my high school got into every ivy except Brown that she applied to (as a URM with high stats and quality essays). Even getting acceptances from a “better” school does nothing to give you shoo-in status.
