Chance me - princeton penn and some others please

I am currently a high school Junior with legacy to both UPenn and Princeton; I know I don't have a super high chance at either but wanted to know which I should use my early action/decision on (or if I should just ignore those schools and use it on something more realistsic). Ok here are my stats:

Caucasian male from Maryland

Public school, one of the best public schools in state and in one of the best public school systems in America (Montgomery County)

GPA: currently 4.13 weighted, will be 4.3/4.4 by time of application. Upward trend- As and Bs in 9th, mostly As in 10th and all As in 11th. Also my GPA will be higher if colleges don't look at high-school level classes I took in middle school such as spanish and math

SAT I: 2280 - 800 CR, 720 math, 760 writing

SAT IIs: Taking in the next coming months (will update with scores) - taking biology, literature and world history

APs and IBs: My school offers both and I am taking a mix of them. Only one AP was offered in 10th grade which I took and got a 5 on the exam, will be taking all exams for my current classes (will update with scores)

9th grade:
Honors Bio
Honors English 9
Honors Spanish 4
Honors Algebra 2
Honors US history 9
Foundations of technology
Guitar 1

10th grade:
AP NSL (Government)
Honors Chem
Honors English 10
Honors Spanish 5
Honors Pre-calc
Gym
One semester health, one semester guitar 2

11th grade:
AP Bio (double period)
AP Psychology
AP World history
AP AB Calculus
IB English 11
Forensic Sciences

12th grade (2012/2013 schedule):
AP US history
AP Statistics
IB English 12
IB Sociology and Anthropology
IB Environmental systems OR Honors Physics (Haven't decided yet)
Double Period Internship class

ECs:
Skiing for 9 years (want to join ski team wherever I go to college and will try to get in contact with coaches)

Started a book club with friends 10 years ago, still have meetings every month and we are currently in the process of raising money for Washington DC inner city libraries. $10,000 is our goal

Attented a summer camp for 9 years and was then selected out of 200+ CITS to work there as a counselor which I will be doing this summer - teaching an eclectic array of subjects and taking care of kids

Have an internship for 12th grade full year lined up with the Multiple Sclerosis society at the Veteran Affairs hospital, will be doing 10 hours a week after school, performing real research and patient care (not just pushing wheelchairs around and serving meals) My grandfather died of Multiple Sclerosis and it has impacted my family greatly

Volunteered at Language ETC, a company that provides cheap english tutoring to immigrants (3 years)

Founding and Organizing chess club at school

Crew 9th and 10th grade (JV in 9th, varsity in 10th)

Member of a community service club founded this year called A Wider Circle at B-CC (1 year)

Been in a band with my friends for 4 years, played the guitar for 7 years

70-80 various other hours of community service

So, would my chances be greater ED and legacy at either Princeton or Penn? Also, it would be a great help to chance me for any of these other schools I have great interest in: Tufts, Duke, Northwestern, Vanderbilt, WashU in St. Louis, Wake Forest, UNC - Chapel Hill, UVA, USC, UMich, Boston College, Rice, Emory, Tulane, UC Berkeley

Thank You!

Princeton EA - reach
Penn ED - low reach, high match if not Wharton
Tufts - match
Duke - low reach
NW - high match
Vandy - high match
WUSTL - high match
Wake Forest - super safety
UNC - match
UVA - safety
USC - safety
Mich. - match
BC - safety
Rice - high match
Emory - high match
Tulane - safety
Berkeley - match

wavylays94- Thanks so much, this is much more than I expected, obviously I’ll take everything with a grain of salt but this was very helpful.

Any other opinions are welcomed as well

Tufts match
Princeton reach
penn low reach
Duke high match
Northwestern match
Vanderbilt high match
WashU in St. Louis, safety
Wake Forest match
UNC - Chapel Hill safety
UVA, safety
USC, match
UMich, match
Boston College, safety
Rice, match
Emory, match
Tulane,
UC Berkeley

^WUSTL is not a safety for anyone because of their waitlisting habit

goodnoodle- thank you as well, any information is appreciated.

I agree with wavylays though, I think a lot of people underestimate how selective WUSTL is, thats the one issue I had with goodnoodle’s list

Also UNC is not a safety because it is very hard for oos students to get in
I’ve known people with higher stats get rejected OOS…
and I still have a problem putting Duke on the match side for almost anyone

Princeton EA - reach
Penn ED - low reach, if ED
Tufts - high match
Duke - low reach
NW - low reach
Vandy - low reach
WUSTL - low reach
Wake Forest - safety
UNC - match
UVA - match
USC - match
Mich. - match
BC - safety/low match
Rice - low reach
Emory - low reach
Tulane - safety
Berkeley - match

Perhaps I was a little harsh with some of those low reaches (they probably could be considered high matches). Chance me back?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1282445-chance-mit-other-schools-7.html

UVA is also not a safety it is actually very competitive for OOS students.

Wavylays and cortana- You make a good point, UVA and UNC especially fill a lot of their classes with in state, making oos very competitive

Hockeydude- thanks those kinds of answers was kind of what I was expecting when I posted, a lot of low reaches, but I can always hope (and I chanced you back, good luck man)

Those are good legacies as both schools like their legacies. Penn ED would be an easy acceptance imo, but I would probably go for Princeton SCEA.

dblazer- thanks for the response, my problem is that penn is such a good school it would be hard to turn away from an “easy acceptance” as you call it to take a chance on princeton

A few other questions if anyone else sees this about admissions

 1. Would the fact that as well as my mother attending penn undergrad, my grandfather was a professor and my sister attended undergrad help at all?
 2. Would the fact that I am planning on going premed change anything? (I know a lot of premed people change their minds but I am just wondering)
 3. What are the biggest weaknesses in my application and any proposed solutions

Oh and BTW, my school doesn’t do class rank so I didn’t report it

Penn would certainly not be an easy acceptance, even ED…
It would just be do-able

And everybody who applies to these schools is pre-med/law lol…

I don’t know if I would’ve given you much of a chance if you hadn’t been legacy, but you can possibly do Penn.

Penn isn’t an “easy acceptance” for anyone lol. My friend who is valedictorian and got into harvard and brown got turned down by Penn. And it will only be even more competitive next year.

For Penn, legacy only helps if you apply ED… it doesn’t matter if you apply regular. So its totally possible that the legacy may provide the extra push to get into Upenn, and that you may not get in regular without that benefit. Do you love Penn enough to apply ED?

Since you have a lot of schools on your list… I would advise dont apply ED to penn because you may end up finding a better fit at one of those other schools. But if you really love Penn and would go there even if accepted to all the other schools on your list, then definitely apply ED to Penn.

Legacy helps a lot at Penn, I’ve heard it not as large a factor at Princeton. Either way, I would apply ED unless you’re strongly leaning towards Pton
