chance me! rising senior but haven't taken any SAT/SAT IIs yet

I just recently decided I might as well apply to American Universities so I have not done any SATs or SAT IIs yet... (I'm from Canada...asian, male--ya i know that doesn't help)

Schools: HYP, MIT, Columbia, U-Penn, Brown, Cornell, Rochester (um these are the schools I just went to visit, not 100% sure where i'm actaully gonna apply)

GPA: 4.00? I had a 96.1% average in freshman year, 96.0% average in sophmore year, and 97.6% average in junior year..i guess i'll be around that this coming year.

Class Rank: 1/~80? not sure exactly what the class size is but my school is not that big.

I go to a private school in Toronto, we don't have that many people applying to American universities, but we usually get around one ivy a year.

Awards:

A lot of school awards: math subject awards, highest average awards (in class and in all of high school), etc.
Board of Governors Scholarships--scholarshpis ($7,500 + $2,500) that the school give out--theres 2 a year and you have to do an essay/interview/etc.

Math Contest Awards--basically i get a distinction in every math contest i've written which is a lot. I'm also the school winner in a bunch of the contests. I had some like 1st in the country math contests but that was back in middle school.

umm in terms of American contests--AMC 10 and AMC 12 school winner..had like 120s on the AMC 10 and like 110 on the AMC 12 this year..qualified for the AIME but only got like around 6 both years

what else.. i got the Bausch & Lomb Honorary Science Award this year..an award the University of Rochester gives out

ECs:

around 100 hours of tutoring underprivileged grade 3-4 children (mainly english), 80 hours of ESL teaching to grade 6 children in China, also a peer tutor...overall with like volunteering at library and other stuff--have around 300+ hours

i have a weekly teaching job--assistant teacher at a math school--taught grade 6 the last two years and will be teaching calculus this year, also a peer tutor,

I play a lotta sports but i'm not great at any of them..was on Varsity Badminton last year.

was the overall leader for a junior science olympics held at our school--basically had to plan/prepare/organize an event run for like 100+ kids coming from 9 different schools

ran the Intramurals program at school, elected Academics Prefect, completed Grade 10 RCM level in Piano, which is the highest level before teacher's degree

APs:

I've only taken one- AP Stats- thats cause we were only allowed one last year, I got 5 on it..will be taking AP Calc, Bio, Physics, Chem, French, English this year..

fluent in english, cantonese, pretty much french..know some mandarin.

SATs: i know i can get 800 in math--i've done like 1 practice test and I got 800 in math, but i was like low 600s in CR and Writing..obviously I need to practice

SAT IIs: thinking of taking Math, Chem and French--i should be able to get 800 in math and chem

guess I don't have too much time to retake SATs...only October, November, December and January test dates (not for all schools I think) left

hope i didnt forget anything..so what are my chances? what should i shoot for? any help would be greatly appreicated

most likely a reject at HYP, MIT, columbia, upenn, and brown. Your SAT scores at not competitive (low 600's cr and wr), especially not compared to international applicants. there will be plenty of international asian males with a perfect math score AND high ( 750+) cr and wr scores. good luck

thats what i thought. i do expect to bring both my writing and cr scores to the 700s though.

keeping that in mind, do you think i'll at least be in the lottery for some of these ivies? i just hope i'm not an outright reject--like there are other parts of the application

International Asian male. Your chances are dramatically lowered everywhere.
Do you need financial aid?

HYP: REJECT
MIT: REJECT
Columbia: REJECT
U-Penn: REJECT
Brown: Unlikely
Cornell: Unlikely
Rochester: In

no financial aid needed

oh well, can't hurt to try anyways

you're right, it can't really hurt. try to get your SAT as close to perfect as possible.

what about my chances for schools like JHU, UC-Berkley, Duke, and University of Chicago? assuming i get 2200+ on the SAT

thx for your replies everybody, i really appreciate it. (theres nobody to ask here in Canada)

All the Ivies are need-blind to Canadians except for Brown BTW.

^ are you sure? i thought only HYP and UPenn are needblind for Canadians.... I am pretty sure Dartmouth, Cornell, and Columbia regard Canadians as internationals... =(

I am certain. Maybe international applicants, but admission is indeed need-blind. Straight from the schools' websites:

Princeton
- Admission to Princeton is need-blind for all undergraduate applicants, including international students.

Harvard
- The financial aid policies for foreign citizens are exactly the same as those for U.S. citizens. All aid is need-based, and admissions decisions are made without regard to whether or not an applicant needs financial assistance.

Yale
- The application procedures and timetable are essentially the same for international students as those for candidates applying from schools in the United States.
- Its need-blind admissions policy extends to international students.

Columbia
- Need-blind admissions for citizens and permanent residents of the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Dartmouth
- The Admissions process is also need-blind for Canadian and Mexican citizens.

Cornell
- Canadian and Mexican citizens and permanent residents can apply though the Cornell financial aid office, and are considered for financial aid in the same way as U.S. citizens and permanent residents (need-blind).

U Penn
- The University maintains a policy of need blind admissions for Canadian citizens and landed immigrants/ permanent residents.

anybody else?

what about JHU, UC-Berkley, Duke, and U-Chicago?

thanks.

bump?

pretty please?

You'll have to show Chicago that you want to attend. Check out their application questions and their admissions homepage to learn more about the school and your fit for it or lack thereof. You're in the range of admitted students for all these schools, but again, so are a lot of people.

I'm assuming that you're also considering McGill and U of T on your end of things...?

thanks. yea i'll be looking at McGill, UofT, Mcmaster, Western, etc..not really worried about Canadian Universities though..as they are marks based--I should be in very good shape.

guess a lot is riding on how I do on the SATs.
