Chance me transferring to Engineering.

This is my first post on CC although I've been lurking around for about 7 months now. I was wondering what people on here think my chances are. I've been told and seen somewhere on this forum a while ago that UMich Engineering is unique for transfers as it mostly only cares about your core engineering GPA of their pre-reqs. This gave me huge hope for salvaging my past of academic foolery. My intended major is computer science.

Community College GPA: 3.5 with 75 credits

I have some classes like nutrition and speech that I got 1.6 and 1.9 in. Also a few 2.0's from a couple years back.

Core Pre-Requisite GPA: 3.9

English 102 - 3.3
Calc 1, 2, 3, Diff Eq. - 4.0
Chem 1 - 4.0
Physics 1, 2 - 4.0
C++ 1, 2 - 4.0

I have 3 letters of recommendation and one of those is from the dean of my school.

In-state as well.

Let me know guys. Feel free to break my heart as well. Thank you.

P.S. If my chances are less than stellar should I apply to other competitive computer science schools?

Wow, you sound a lot like myself and I would like to think I have a good chance of getting in. Just for comparative analysis, I have 115 credits with a 3.82 GPA, but my core courses give me a 3.9 something. I submitted a letter of recommendation from my commanding officer and the Dean of Mechanical Engineering at EMU. I’m applying to Mechanical Engineering, but as long as you make the GPA minimum for Computer Science I think you should be good. I’m assuming you’re applying to Fall '12? In-state will definitely help, I’m trying for in-state, but don’t know if I’ll qualify.

Oh, one thing I would recommend is distinguishing your pre-req GPA when you submit your resume… that might be the only good chance to quantify your numbers to the admission board. Essays are great to explain your unique situation, but give yourself an extra shot by clearly outlining it. Let me know if you need any help and I’ll try my best!
