Test Scores:

SAT IIs: Terrible... Physics/Math2/Literature: All in the 590 range

Extracurriculars/Clubs:

Leader of Engineering Club: Created a Solar Powered boat from scratch and got 3rd in a competition against other schools.

Key Club, Octagon Club, Bottles For the Bay

Piano (started this year at school with no musical experience, getting quite fond of it, highest grade in the class! yay?)

Community service hours cleaning up trash around the school, recycling school bottles from trash cans.

My Life: My parents came to the USA from Korea to give their children a better chance. We initially owned a liquor store, but when I was five years old my father passed away. My mother went from different jobs, from food service to bartender, to support my older brother and I. My brother was a brilliant student, winning California essay contests and awards all over, but after my dad died he got into bad habits, drugs, and eventually got expelled and did not graduate, which really brought my mom down. I wasn't a great student at ALL, but after seeing my mom so disappointed I just had to step up to make her proud of something.

I know it seems stupid, but I blame my low freshman/sophomore grades on this... In the course of those two years I moved to three different schools - moved once halfway through freshman year, then again at the middle of sophomore year, then again at the end of sophomore year. If you look at my transcript you'll notice my GPA plummeting from about a 3.9 to a 3.6 both years second semester. Being the new kid is NOT fun! Learning the new classroom rules and procedures is terrible too.

So yeah, I basically wanted to make it into UCLA, until today when I saw my SAT score drop 10 points and my ACT score stay the same....

Now any UC (Besides riverside) would be a godsend. Can you guys chance me at the UCs and any other decent/good college I have a chance at? Also Caltech, i love engineering..

Well, one thing you need to remember is that the college admission people are human; they will see the tough things that you have gone through and take that into account accordingly.

However, your stats are a bit low, which makes things really tough. If you write really good essays, that could get in you to quite a few places. The best thing you can do right now is dedicate yourself until the end of your senior year. That means getting out and doing a bunch of community service, possibly taking classes at your local community college, and doing well in all your senior classes. If you do this and continue to work hard, regardless of what college you get into, you’ll ultimately end up as successful as your parents could have ever dreamed when they came to America.

Good Luck!

You have a reasonable shot at all UCs accept B, LA and SD with a good application. Caltech, probably not.

I would say you have a decent shot at the middle tier uc’s. Unfortunately I think you have no chance at ucla or Berkeley… Your scores and gpa are simply way to low. If you get lucky, maybe San diego. You should take the sat twos and the regular sat or act one more time in the fall. If you improve a lot, this will greatly increase your chances. Best of luck.

thanks for the comments
my goal right now is san diego

with the cut this year ucs are getting harder. sry but with your grades it’s pretty hard to get into ucsd ^^ umm…i would even say you might not get into uci. but don’t be dishearted cuz your essay makes a lot of a difference. work on your sat scores not that i can say anything (retaking too) and who knows. you could get an awesome score. good luck
