Chance Me (UIUC, UMichigan, Northwestern, etc.

Currently a Junior from the Chicago area and curious to see what I could get into in order to plan what colleges to apply to. The fact that I'm an Asian middle class female may hinder my chances. I'm considering going into business and I was thinking of UIUC or maybe Michigan Ann Arbor as the middle tier and schools like Northwestern or NYU as reach schools. I'm open/appreciative to other suggestions about schools with good business programs.

ACT: 34 (will take again)
SAT: 2200 (will take again)
GPA: 3.925 unweighted, 5.016 unweighted (it's a wierd weighting system)
No rank at my school starting this year, but last year I was 1st (or at least tied for 1st), but did get two B's but probably still in top 1% (out of close to 800 students in my grade)

AP Tests:World History-5
Computer Science - 4
US History - 5
As a junior I'm going to take AP Lang, AP Macro, AP Gov't, AP Stat, AP Physics B, and AP Calc BC

SAT subject: US history - 800
I plan to take Math 2 and Chemistry

Freshman:
Honors - Bio, English, Algebra 2, Critical Thinking/ Gifted,
AP World
Spanish 2
All A/A-

Soph:
Honors - Chem, English, Trig/Calc A, Critical Think/ Gifted (it's a two year class)
AP - Computer Science and US History
Spanish 3
All A/A-

Junior:
AP- Lang, Macro, Gov't, Stat, Physics B, and Calc BC
Spanish 4
For first semester Physics and Calc I got B+'s and the rest are A's

Senior (going to take):
AP - Lit, Psyc, Bio, Chem, Spanish
Multivariable Calc (technically a college class at U of I so not really AP)

Extracurriculars (I feel like this may be my downfall):
NHS
Writer's Workshop
Volunteering at a nursing home
Volunteering at a hospital
Hook? - Past two years I went to China and taught students English

Your grades are great and your scores are good too but you are right–your extracurriculars could be your downfall. Try to do something meaningful this summer (maybe keep teaching Chinese students English), to show colleges you are passionate about something besides school alone.
Northwestern would probably be a reach for you, UMI a high match. Good luck, and if you have time, chance me!

UIUC: low match/match
UMich: low match/match for LSA, match/high match for Ross
NWU: high match
NYU: high match/low reach

This is a good list of schools. You may add a safety and another match, then you are all set. Hope you will get even better scores in retakes. Do you have all 3 subscores of SAT above 700?

Yeah 760, 720, 720, for Math, Reading, Writing respectively. I was thinking of using the ACT if my SAT score doesn’t improve since it’s higher using conversation charts. Also, for another extracurricular I’ve played piano for 10 years and passed AIM level ten.

Your ACT and SAT scores match up pretty well, so you may want to send either or both scores in. On the other hand, I have read that it is easier to raise the SAT score than the ACT one by retaking. Did you get any awards in piano? Or at least anything from district or state solo and ensemble?

No, I never competed in piano.

Did you do any performance routinely instead? If not, you don’t have a passion on it and it may not help much for your application.

I think my best bet is to focus on teaching in China for two years and making the curriculum/etc.

Also, what do you guys think my chances for Carnegie Mellon are?
