I’m trying to go to Liberal arts at the UofMn twin cites for Computer Science.
My gpa is 3.0 from CC, not great…I know, I also have nine withdrawals…I had really bad depression and untreated adhd. Recently got diagnosed, was wondering what my chances are?
I already took all the pre requisites, I did better in my stem classes than humanities. Mainly earned As and Bs in those. I have self taught myself css/html/javascript and currently do freelance work.
Are you applying as a transfer student, and what year are you attempting to enter (i.e. sophomore, Junior, etc.)
Sophomore level, yea I’m applying as transfer
CLA lets in a relatively larger number of transfers compared to the other colleges of the UMN so that will help your application. You’ll need to explain the withdrawals and it wouldn’t hurt to touch on the underlying health struggles (you should talk to your CC advisor and your health provider about the prudence of doing so first just because there is a debate about whether to disclose mental health issues, given schools’ concerns about violence, etc. To my mind, there is a huge difference between ADHD/anxiety/depression and, say, schizophrenia or other psychoses. Still, I’m not a college advisor or doctor so take my views with a grain of salt and get feedback from the professionals on this matter). Most of all, get a teacher or counselor recommendation backing up your statement that things have really turned around academically for you and that you are well prepared to face the rigors of the major now.
Finally, have a set of backups in mind just in case you are waitlisted. Your local state U, for instance, should be able to give you a decent experience in comp sci. That’s a pretty rigorous choice of major, regardless of where you end up.
Good luck to you!
Edit/update to the above: as you do freelance, definitely bring that up as an extra-curricular that demonstrates your skill and abilities. Should help your application significantly. Finally, as an URM you should consider filling out the optional diversity essay explaining how your experience as a URM can contribute to the overall diversity on campus (or choose another angle that’s appropriate to your experience). Sorry I forgot to mention these in the previous post. Again, good luck to you!
Thank you! Sorry for the late response I’ll take everything into consideration!
