I want to apply for the college of liberal arts. I live in Minnesota my GPA is a 3.1, and I haven't got my act back yet but It will probably be in the 22-24 range.
In school: Student council, Link Crew, play two sports. Volunteer for youth football and have done kindness retreats.
Outside of school: Volunteer for my church and special Olympics.
Also, I'm planning on transferring into Carlson later on if I get accepted. My dad is a VERY successful business man and I was wondering if that would increase my chances of getting in (to CLA or Carlson).
Please let me know what you think and give me feedback, thanks!

UMN primarily admits by stats. Here is a link that breaks down admitted freshmen by college. It will give you an idea of where you fit

<a href=“Academic Profile of Fall 2022 Admitted Freshman Applicants by College | Office of Admissions”>http://admissions.tc.umn.edu/academics/profile.html

It’s a very short, “just the facts” application. They ask for relatives who are alums of UMN, but I don’t know how much weight they give that (or if your father is an alum)?

If you were my son/daughter, I would tell you to:

1) Try to get your ACT score up (you can take it in Dec even for priority deadline). Remember to sign up for the ACT w/ writing (UMN requires).

If there is a section pulling your composite down, focus on improving that section in the short time you have left. You can get ideas from the discussions on the forum in the testing section. I am assuming that you can also try the ACT again if you are not happy w/ your score and update it w/ UMN if you improve your score. They don’t “superscore”, but if your new composite score is significantly improved, it’s worth updating w/ a college.

2) Get the best grades you can this year, and

3) See if your GC or dean will contact UMN admissions and advocate for you - maybe pointing out an upward trend in grades or rigor of classes or other positive qualities you could bring to the school.

It’s difficult to change your GPA significantly at this point, but you could try to show an upward trend for sending 1st semester grades and to give your GC something to advocate to UMN for you. Similarly, if there is a general upward trend in grades through HS or something happened in your life that affected your grades for a period of time, that could be something that your GC could tell UMN. I don’t know how much GC’s can change admission decisions, but it doesn’t hurt to try - especially if UMN is your #1 choice.

Try to apply early (before Dec 15th) if you can. I think the Dec ACT is the last one you can take to make the priority deadline. I’ve heard that chances of admission are better if you apply earlier (I don’t know if it’s true or not - but in our contacts w/ the UMN so far, they have always talked about the priority deadline).

Good luck!

“My dad is a VERY successful business man and I was wondering if that would increase my chances of getting in (to CLA or Carlson).”

That would only help if he gave A LOT of $ to the University.

The ACT and GPA both need a bump to have a chance

How about a 25 gpa?
