You only have a small chance of admission based on what you are listing here unless you are being recruited for athletics. UVA is very, very tough OOS and your gpa/SAT score is lower than their typical student. Go ahead and apply (you never know) but have some matches/safeties that you are excited about just in case it doesn’t work out.
@Thorsmom66 Thank you very much for the context. I did the CollegeLab calculator and the chance came back as 32% chance of acceptance. I fear that the calculator data does not factor in out of state as an issue. Thus I wanted to get a pulse from this expert community. Thank you!
@Thorsmom66 any tips to help improve the odds? We did live in VA for 2 years of middle school if that helps
I think you have to be a resident at the time you apply to get in-state status at UVA. In terms of your application, make sure you spend a good amount of time on your essays and personal statement so you present yourself as well as possible. Going forward I would not rely on any on-line calculators to determine your likelihood of admission at any super selective school - they tend to be overly optimistic in my experience. Knowing that UVA will be a very tough admit (as it is for nearly every student) think about what you like about the school and look for some matches that have a similar vibe where the chances of admission are greater. Good luck!
@Thorsmom66 Thank you for paying it forward
Happy to offer what advice I can. I have a senior this year and I realize this is a challenging, and often confusing, time for kids and their parents. You sound like a terrific applicant and I’m certain there are many schools that will be delighted to have you.
Are you considering any LACs ?
As a, presumably, non-recruited athlete applying for D-I University of Virginia, you may garner significant attention due to your athletic accomplishments & talent at several D-3 LACs.
Varsity baseball pitcher & captain of varsity cross-country team should make you a very attractive candidate for the most selective LACs even without D-I athletic times or qualifications.
I am not trying to discourage you from applying to UVA or to any other elite university, but I am suggesting that your status & accomplishments should mean a lot to a small community such as those found at LACs.
Williams College in Massachusetts and Middlebury College in Vermont are both outstanding schools academically, and both are sited in beautiful locations, and both offer excellent athletics programs.
What do you want to study in college ?
@Publisher Thank you very much for the feedback.
I am looking to study Psychology but I am not 100% sure.
I will look into LAC schools more
Have you asked your guidance counselor? If your school has sent kids to UVA in the past they might be able to tell you what kind of GPA and scores worked. I know you said you go to a rigorous private school so that might be a positive but w/o having that context and just comparing your GPA to an average OOS public school student it’s not the amazing GPA I would guess is required for admittance for an OOS student.
You can see some data on first year UVA students on the UVA website here: Statistics | The Office of Undergraduate Admission
90% of admitted students reporting school rank are in the top 10%. About 1/3rd of admitted students are OOS. Your SAT looks to be within the 50th percentile range but the bar for acceptance is higher for OOS so I don’t know if being w/in that range is good enough.
I think a lot really depends on the rigor of your high school and if it is a school known to UVA admissions. If your high school has a reputation for producing super prepared student with rigorous coursework then your GPA and you athletics might be enough to get you there but if you went to my kid’s high school I would say slim chances.
@Sweetgum Thank you very much. Quick question. It looks like UVA is a reach for sure. I was thinking that using ED for a reach was a good strategy. Do you think it is a waste of my ED shot with UVA or does it still make sense?
And per your question, my high school is very good, but not top shelf like Lawrenceville, etc. I had to take SSAT (did very well) and get recommendations, etc. I would be surprised if UVA has heard of my school but you never know
I can’t advise on ED at UVA but maybe someone else can. What other schools are you considering for ED?
Please edit your post and take out the link to your school. Would be very easy for someone to figure out your identity.
As far as UVA, it is a reach school for you although early decision increases your odds slightly. Go talk to your school college advisor. They will know how you compare to past applicants from your school. From my son’s out of state private school, successful applicants have generally been near the top of the class with 1500 + on the SAT. May be different from your school. Good luck
No shot at UVA honestly - would even struggle at schools like UMD, U of SC, etc.
You should look at schools like UTK or WVU to be - not too far off geographically. Or an App State. If you want more urban, Pitt.
Good luck to you.
That won’t matter at all for admissions to UVA.
