Chance me? Where else to apply? (GWU/NYU/UVA/etc.)

Hey guys. Would love some input on whether or not you think I am competitive(have a chance) at transferring to any of these schools. Also, are there any other schools you suggest that I apply to?
Schools I am applying to: UVA, W&M, GWU, NYU, UMD, UMich, Syracuse.

UVA is my #1 choice, however, I do not have the GPA to compete for transfer into McIntire. I would be Econ.

Current Situation: In my freshman/sophomore year in CC. Will be sending out my transfer applications this fall to join as Spring 2017 or Fall 2018, whichever one I get; I am ahead of my class time-wise, so joining fall 2018 i’m graduating on time (class of 2020). I want to get into banking/consulting after graduation, but this isn’t a post seeking advice on getting into those fields, I have WSO for that.

Background:

Ethnicity: Middle-Eastern Male, 19 y/o.

GPA: 3.5-3.6, I realize it’s on the lower end but my EC’s make up for it in my opinion… Very nice upward trend, my only two C’s are from my first semester which was while I was in HS, dual enrolled at my CC.

Background: First generation born in US, both parents are now successful but started off with nothing at all as immigrants. Come from humble roots.

Personal Statement: I can directly tie my personal statement to why any school that is a target/semi target and where I plan to go after my education is complete. I have a true desire to work in finance and a natural interest in economics/current affairs. My personal statement will be individual to all schools I apply to. My personal statement will be strong, that, I know.

Extracurriculars: I am the president of two clubs on my campus. One is a finance/banking club, the other is a club for unrepresented minorities that want to excel in the professional world. In both clubs my role is to facilitate and help my peers learn everything they can about the field/future they want to work in. We also hold charity and fundraiser events/hold meetings weekly to help each other out working towards our goals. (From getting an A in that calc 2 class to perfecting the transfer apps/seeking internships, etc.)

Work: Not sure if this will be useful or not, but I work in data analytics for a successful startup that was recently bought for ~$30MM. It’s a very attention to detail job and I work with excel and some online databases.

Hey there,

Just a few pointers. McIntire is for third year students. So, you can transfer early with an econ major and internally transfer a year later. I also think they favor students from within their school. My tip is prioritize gpa over Ecs, some admissions officer can’t relate to your opinion. Also your work experience/ internship is in my opinion more important than Ecs. So you should defiantly mention it in your essay or resume and try to embellish it.

I was also in the same situation you were in but I am this fall at McIntire from a CC in maryland.
As far as I know you have a good chance at UMD, GW. NYU and UVA I dont’t know but apply anyways. Don’t know about the others.
Georgetown’s business school is also a good try. Work hard your sophomore year and prioritize you gpa over Ecs. (opinion) Good luck.

Thanks! I did not even think to come in early and transfer internally. Is it that easy? I heard its still very competitive from within. Sounds good and thanks for the insight!

It is not easy in general, but it is easier to transfer internally. Go to McIntire’s Transfer page. In 2016, 66% students got accepted to McIntire internally. But the average gpa was 3.71. This means that many people don’t apply in general but those who do have a good chance. When you look at those who applied from another school or CC the offer rate was 16% and the mean gpa was 3.86. It is very competitive in general but it is a easier to transfer from within the school.
