Chance Me! Will Chance Back (Penn, Chicago, Northwestern, etc...)

Hey guys! I'm a high school senior who's paranoid and afraid that I won’t get in anywhere, so I’m in need of a few more schools to apply to. Does anyone have any suggestions in addition to the school listed? If someone could chance me for these, that'd be great too!

Current List:
Penn (ED - Wharton)
UChicago (EA)
UMich - Ann Arbor (applied EA, but pushed to RD because... of circumstances)
Cornell
Columbia
Dartmouth
Northwestern
Carnegie Mellon CS or Engineering (Haven't decided yet.)
Wash U (Danforth Scholarship)
MIT
JHU
Stanford
Honors Pitt – Accepted w/ full ride

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown):
ACT: 35 (35E, 34M, 33R, 36S, 9W)
SAT II: 770 Math Level II, 730 Chemistry, 730 Biology E, 790 Chinese
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 5.3 Weighted (all As in hardest schedule possible)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): not officially ranked, but I've been discretely told that I'd be Valedictorian if our school did.
AP Exams: 5 on all - Calc BC, Statistics, Chemistry, Chinese (Note: I took a bunch of AP
Classes (About 11 total) but was unable to take the test due to financial reasons)
Senior Year Course Load: Honors Linear Algebra (No, I'm not a delusional Asian; It’s a college level class), AP Physics C: Mechanics, AP Physics C: E&M, AP Language, Health/International Relations, AP European History, AP Psychology
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Merit Semi-Finalist, AP Scholar (So, basically none)

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (leadership in parenthesis):
Varsity Rifle Team (Senior Officer) - (Yes. I shoot guns for fun)
Model United Nations – (Captain)
School Charity Event (Organizer/Chair)
Piano (Just something I love)

Job/Work Experience: Waitress + Paid intern at a competitive program
Volunteer/Community service:
Teacher for 3 years
Volunteer researcher at above mentioned program before getting the actual internship
Hospital Volunteer (Total ~400 hours)

Summer Activities: Research/intern/Hospital Volunteer

Essays: Decent. They're unique, for sure. (Cause I'm a little quirky/crazy) I'm not the best writer, but I'd say its average Ivy League App work.

Teacher Recommendation:
APUSH - This guy can WRITE. He only picks 30 students to write for every year and he gets about 60 requests a year. He's also my MUN coach so...
APEGS - The letter is going to be glowing... But I fear for the grammar. I dont know how well written this is going to be...
Counselor Rec: Glowing. My counselor knows me pretty well and she loves me but it’s her first year so... I dont know. =</p>

Interview: Generally, I do great. I like talking. I talk A LOT.
Penn: Great. It was a pretty organic conversation. He kept on saying how I’m very versatile and very easy to converse with. He asked me a really complex ethical question about a situation in a book and although it took me a while to answer, he seemed pleased that I didn’t immediately answer yes or no. He said that he liked seeing/hearing my thought process
Chicago: Horrific. He just made me ask him questions. I don’t even know if he knows anything about me. What is he going to write on the letter he send to Chicago?

Other
State (if domestic applicant): PA
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Semi-Competitive Public
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I mean. I shoot guns? That’s about it.

Reflection
Strengths: Most of my stats are average Asian. My Internship is definitely a strength.
Weaknesses: My inability to win anything substantial. (Awards) Maybe essays, but I doubt it. I think they’re just average.

If anyone can suggest a school that'll beat out Pitt Honors with a full scholarship, it'd be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

You look like a pretty strong applicant, but then again, with the schools you’re applying to it’s nearly impossible to tell for anyone. Michigan you’re definitely in at though. Have you looked into UNC and UVa? I don’t know about scholarship, but you would probably easily get in there as well. I know people with similar stats that also got a lot of money from Tulane if you are looking down there, although I’m not sure about how strong their engineering is. Hope this helps! Chance back?

best of luck to you!

You definitely will get into some of these schools! You are a very competitive applicant! If you apply to all these and write great essays I can see you getting to, at the very least, 3 of the very competitive schools. It’s hard to predict which ones, but you definitely will go somewhere great. Wharton ED is tough, but you never know! Good luck!

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1418125-chance-me-duke-other-top-schools.html</a></p>

You have a great chance at all of those schools. Your EC’s are well above average! You could probably have a really good chance at getting a full ride to Lehigh as well! MIT, Standford, and Columbia will definitely be a slight reach, but that’s for everyone!

Good luck!

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1426282-chances-william-mary-will-chance-back.html</a></p>

Thank you both!

Penn’s actually contacted me already and vaguely suggested that they’re going to defer me because I’m a better fit for their M&T program (which is SO much more competitive.) I guess I have the stats for it, but not the demonstrated interest for JUST business. =</p>

Any ideas on other schools I could apply to?

Hi I think GPA and scores are stellar, ECs are a little weak (I really like the Rifle Team), everything else seems generic (sorry!!), but make sure you have good ECs and Essays! You def has a solid chance! Id say high match, low range! Best of luck to you!!!

chance me pweaseeeee

Goodluck! Out of 100’s:

Penn (ED - Wharton) 27
UChicago (EA) 34
UMich - Ann Arbor (applied EA, but pushed to RD because… of circumstances) 34
Cornell 35
Columbia 18
Dartmouth 29
Northwestern 29
Carnegie Mellon CS or Engineering (Haven’t decided yet.) either 38
Wash U (Danforth Scholarship) dunno
MIT if engineering, then 18, if other, then 23
JHU 25
Stanford 30
Honors Pitt

Penn 20/100
UChicago 25/100
UMich - Ann Arbor 60/100
Cornell 40/100
Columbia 20/100
Dartmouth 30/100
Northwestern 40/100
Carnegie Mellon CS or Engineering 70/100
Wash U 50/100
MIT 20/100
JHU 30/100
Stanford 20/100

Note that you’re asian and since many that apply to these school have equivalent, if not better, grades, you’re chances are lower to any ivy. You’re SAT composite stands in the 70% percentile which is nice but you really need to have outstanding essays to get in, lets say MIT. It’s Ranked 1 in the World. What does that sound like? Imagine there are 10 thousand people in a region but only 1000 can survive, this is it. Everyone does everything to get into these schools; super competitive. Anything above a 2100 on sat 3.8 UW GPA, 700+ sat 2s is the same for these collleges. What matters are essays, passion, and activites outside of school! Looks like you have a decent amount of activities, you may be passionate , but your essays are the ones that are going to get you in if you were to get in.

Penn (ED - Wharton) low reach
UChicago (EA) high match
UMich - Ann Arbor match
Cornell match
Columbia high match
Dartmouth high match
Northwestern match
Carnegie Mellon high match
JHU low match
Stanford reach

I’d say you have a great chance at all of those schools! Your stats are really impressive even if EC’s are a weakness, never underestimate the hook of first Gen.

You’re a given for Michigan (my state school and half my high school goes there). I’m also ED Wharton! Anxiously awaiting the 12th. I’m SUPER curious about Penn contacting you, what exactly did they say? I’m worried I don’t have enough that is specifically business focused, though my friend is in M&T and didn’t do anything special in high school either. Did they e-mail you?

good luck!

Hey thechor346, why don’t you apply to Berkeley, Duke, Harvard, and Princeton as well? You seem interested in studying the Natural Sciences.

My god. I want to get into UPenn and I only have a 3.97 UW and a 4.34 W…I would say apply to every Ivy. The only question I have is why a hospital intern, if you do not want to pursue medicine. If you are applying to Wharton why haven’t you taken advantage of a business internship?

Nope. No chance at all at any of the schools mentioned above. Who wants a rifle-shooting Asian girl? You better hope that community college will even consider your application.

@babblingbrookie: Good luck to you too! They emailed me. Made me write an essay last Wednesday. A WEEK before decisions come out and on the LAST DAY of “selection committee”. Then, they decided to call my high school counselor saying that I’d be a better candidate for M&T and basically that I should have applied for it. And that they wanted me to move to regular decision and apply for M&T. So long story short, I went through hell and they want to deffer me to compete for a more competitive program. Yay Me.

@Ranjitm: I wanted to pursue Biomedical engineering; hence, the bioengineering internship and all the med stuff. I managed to connect it to business, but (clearly) they thought it was still 50% engineering and 50% business so. Yeah.

@Chewydog: So… where were you today after school? =P

Considering that I was enjoying a frosty with fries from Wendy’s, I’m not quite sure what you are trying to get at. Good luck with Penn though.

@Chewydog: Yeah, yeah. Good luck with CalTech, you meanie head.

Chance me! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=1426439</a></p>

Ah gotcha. Sounds to me like they really want you for M&T, otherwise they wouldn’t go through the trouble of contacting you. My friend loves the program even though it’s a lot of work. It might suck to have to be “deferred” until spring but I think your chances are looking pretty good.
good luck!
