+{[~ Chance me, will return favor ~]}+

I'm a junior at a large Wisconsin public school near Madison, not the best school overall (alot less possibilities for extracurrics & whatnot, plus I've got to work really hard to get anywhere in biology, and I have to arrange my bio extracurrics myself). I'm guessing that my main selling point will be the depth of my knowledge in biology (Many biology awards, including the United Sates Biology Olympiad, and very, very strong standardized test scores in that area), and my involvement in public speaking.

White female, bilingual (Russian & English), 1st generation immigrant, parents relatively affluent

Major: Biology, possibly Microbio.

GPA: 3.95, Unweighted
My school doesn't do weighted GPA or Class rank.
Most rigorous courses available, currently taking 4 APs, an honors course, & a college course. 3/5 HS classes are all seniors except for me. Unfortunately, I may run out of APs for my senior year (we've only got 8 AP classes in all)

ECs:
Science Olympiad 10, 11, planning to start a team at my school for 12th
Debate Team 10 (Varsity Letter), 11 (cocaptain), planning on 12 (I'll almost certainly be captain)
Forensics (competitive public speaking) Team 10 (Varsity Letter), 11 (probably will get some leadership position, season hasn't started yet), planning on 12 (probably captain)
Math Team 10 (captain of JV), 11

Test Scores:
SAT prediction : 2260*
*Based on PSAT scores, will take SAT in Jan.

SAT II Bio - 800
(More SAT IIs soon)
AP Bio - 5
Taking AP Calc AB, AP Psych, AP Language & Comp, AP chem this year
Planning to take Bio GRE (exam to get into grad school, basically) this November, done really well (99th percentile) in all practice tests so far.

Awards:
USABO National Finalist (top 20 in the nation out of 10,000 participants), 10
Science Olympiad Health Sci 2nd place at state, Cell Bio 1st , 10
NJ science League, 1st place in Bio I, 9
Varsity letter in Debate
Varsity Letter in Forensics
Silver medalist in Oratory at WHSFA State
National Forensics League member with Honor

Etc:
Expecting really good recs ( I know who I'll ask and I think they both have a really high opinion of me)
Taking college bio classes @ the U Wisconsin (the U that most people from my school are looking to get into), will have taken ~15 credits or more by the time I apply to college.
Internship in carrot genetics lab last summer
Worked at day camp summer before that.

Planning on applying to:
Basically all the Ivies, U of Wisconsin as a safety

it seems like you have nothing to worry about if you keep at it

What's up with the "NJ Science League" award? I'm not sure if I entirely believe your app...

Its tough to tell when you're just getting into junior year, however if you keep on pace you'll give yourself a chance to get into the ivies. They're all reaches, but I'd say that you can potentially put yourself in a great position to be admitted to one or more.

One word: WOW. I think your strong biology focus is really going to help you. You have USABO, 1st place NJ Science League, medals in Science Olympiad, and biology research. Very good chances at all. haha..you're basically the person I want to be like. You're amazing. I love biology too, going for USABO this year...

You seem to be in a great position. Without any serious screwups, you should be in great shape to apply anywhere.

@ Nj Azn premed: I moved to Wisconsin right before my Sophomore year, and I competed in NJSL my frosh year (Bio I is first year bio). The wierd thing about NJSL was that I met the person who got 2nd place to me in NJSL at USABO finals... it was really funny.

@ Meadow: Good luck in USABO! I haven't started studying yet, but I really should.

You definitely have the grades and Extracurriculars. If your PSAT score converted to a 2260, I'd bump it up another 50-100 points. My PSAT score converted to a 1940 and I ended up with a 2190, possibly higher depending on how October SATs go. I'd feel pretty good about your aps. Good luck!

As a junior, it's hard to tell because you have to predict grades and your SAT score, etc. But I would say that you are on the right path- your biology awards are great- make sure you do some good summer programs; the prestigious, hard-to-get-into ones as you probably know have deadlines soon so be on top of that. I would say that it's great you have a focus so capitalize upon that: get a great summer research job and make sure you do compelling research so you can apply for awards/submit research. Do things that interest you. Volunteer- so show your 'humanitarian' or service side but approach it with doing things you have an interest in- so for example (and this is lame) but developing a biology program for disadvantated students where you teach classes to make biology interesting, fun and promote the scientific field. Just do service that YOU are interested in and make it interesting. Don't do your average volunteering at a hospital unless you can do something significant there- and that doesn't mean you have to serve on a board but that you're willing to invest enough time to develop relationships, develop programs, help out, innovate, etc. Try to get a high sat score- seriously. That will help you out because sooo many ivy leaguer's are heading into the science/bio field and you need to do anything and everything to develop your own niche and stand out. Your awards are interesting and great- great job!

For your college selection, you're a junior so I won't be wary of your "all the ivies and u wisconsin." Just know that when time comes, make selections based on what the colleges offer, etc. and not the brand name. Given, all the ivies have top of the state bio programs and research facilities but broaden your search and make sure when the time comes, you know what it is about each ivy/school that makes it particularly special to you. Remember, there are a million gazzillion other kids out there with similar dreams and aspirations vying for the same spot, the same field- so what can YOU do to let admissions officers see you and your sincerity?

Good luck!

yeah it's hard to tell since you're a junior, but keep doing what you're doing and you have to attain the best.

in for at least one ivy

I figure you have a good good shot at Cornell... and you will be highly competitive with all of the others assuming your grades remain the same. Impressive with the Bio Olympiad! One of the US's representatives from the International Bio Olympiad actually goes to my school. I believe he placed 3rd or 4th at the international competition. Crazy...

oh yeah, chance me please!
