I know that this is both a lousy and probably premature question, but I’ve been stressing myself out a lot lately about my chances at Barnard (I’ve always had a very strong interest in small LACs located in or near cities, I lovelovelove NYC, and I’m quite a bit of a feminist), and I was hoping to get some idea of where I stand. I’m a current high school junior, and here are the stats that I hope to have by the end of this school year:

SATI: 770 W, 730 CR, 660 M: 2160

SATII: English Lit: 700, French: 700, US History: 650-700

ACT: I’m more into the humanities than math/science, and a reasonably decent test taker–should I bother with the ACT?

APs: English: 4/5, Art History: 4/5, Studio Art: 4/5/6, AP US: 4/5

IB: N/A

Junior Year course load: English, AP Art History, French 4, Trigonometry, third year of Studio Art, AP Environmental Science (1st term only), AP US History (2nd term only)

Senior Year course load: English, AP French 5, AP Biology, fourth year of Studio Art, Holocaust Studies, Pre-calculus

GPA: we don’t use a 4-point system at my school, but I’d say about a 93 on a 100-point scale.

**I attend a rigorous private-day school that does not assign levels for most classes nor uses the “Honors” label. Some of my classes might be “Honors” level but I don’t know which ones–I believe the college counseling office at my school sends a description of the tough curriculum to universities. I’m taking a reasonably hard course load, mostly because most kids stop taking arts courses after first-term Freshman year…my Studio Art class gives me a fuller schedule.

EC’s: Editor-in-chief of award-winning school newspaper (senior), very selective volunteer art program at a hospital through my school (2 students per year)(junior & senior), Shakespeare theatre participation (freshman & sophomore), 4 years varsity crew, near-religious devotion to out-of school art class since eighth grade, involvement in general community service activities for my school

Hooks: If any, that I have an extraordinary passion/devotion to fine art. I’ve gone out of my way to nurture my love of art while attending a demanding high school without a great arts program (e.g. attending out of school classes, sometimes as much as 3 times a week, compiling an AP studio art portfolio even though my school doesn’t offer the course, and taking a required history course over the summer to make time for AP art history)

I’ve done a bit of research on Barnard’s Young Women’s Leadership Institute–it looks wonderful. Is applying for/doing this program the summer before my senior year a good way to exhibit my interest in Barnard, or is there no real correlation between students of the pre-college program and future students of the college? I am mostly concerned about my weak math courses (it’s the “regular” track for my high school but it appears most people graduate having taken calculus), but then again, I am going to be selling myself as a writer/artist…

Sorry for the huuuuuge post!
