Chance me?

I've never done this before, so bear with me...

I'm a caucasian female planning on applying into BioMed Engineering or Biochemistry. The schools I'm currently planning on applying to are:

Columbia
Harvard (maybe)
Stanford
U Penn
Vanderbilt
Johns Hopkins
Boston University
UCLA
UC Berkeley
UCSD
UCSB
University of Washington (Seattle)

I'm considering adding on Yale and Princeton, but I don't really want to waste my time with applications for colleges that I know that I have very very little chance of getting in to.

Stats:
GPA: 4.0 unweighted, 4.9 weighted (school doesn't rank)
SAT: 2250 (800 CR, 740 W, 710 M)
SAT II: Bio E: 730
US History: 780
Taking Math II and Chemistry in October...

ECs
-On varsity for Cross Country/Track all 4 years
-Tri-M music honors society member since 10th grade, plus current Vice President/publicity chair (meaning, I'm in charge of all publicity in our music dept), 10 hours per semester
-Docent at local interpretive center/aquarium (avg 4 hours/mon)
-Member of NHS
-Member of CSF (California Scholarship Federation)
-Participate in annual advent orchestra
-President of Chinese Honors Society

My ECs are really focused, but I'm very dedicated to them, specifically Chinese, music, sports and docenting.

Also, the summer before my junior year, I went to China for 6 weeks with my school to study the language/culture. Basic foreign exchange trip. It was a very influential trip in my life and will therefore probably be the basis for one of my (many) essays.

Thanks for reading all of that. And I'd love further suggestions for schools to look into based on my qualifications (as if I needed any more schools to my list).

(mehh I put this in two separate locations. this is super hard to navigate haha)

I’d say the only thing really hurting you is your low SAT math score. Not that it’s low, but too low considering your major and the schools you’re applying to. However, if you take the ML2 SAT and get a 750+, I’d say that’d redeem you, so either retake the SAT and get a higher math or really study and get a high ML2 score! :)

The other problem is that your EC’s aren’t very focused, however, if you can somehow show a true commitment to them, then you’re probably fine…

A huge plus though is that you’re applying as an engineering major, and since you’re a girl, that’s a huge plus. :p

I’d say that it’d be worth applying anywhere. :)

Columbia: High Reach (just like everyone else though, so don’t worry)
Harvard (maybe): See columbia.
Stanford: See columbia
U Penn: Low-mid reach
Vanderbilt: Low reach, i think. I’m not too familiar with them though.
Johns Hopkins: Low reach
Boston University: Low reach
UCLA: No idea.
UC Berkeley: Low reach
UCSD: no idea.
UCSB: no idea.
University of Washington (Seattle): no idea.
Yale: See columbia.
Princeton: See columbia.

Good luck! :)

“Boston University: Low reach”

???

Are you applying for FA?

@LesleyCordero, about the SAT math, I know! I’m pretty much done with the SAT I, but I’m planning on taking the SAT II and hopefully I’ll get over a 750 (but it’s tough, the curve is unbelievable… I got a 710 on a practice a couple months ago, so we’ll see). Thank you for the advice though!

And @20more, I don’t think I qualify for FA…

I think you have decent chances at many colleges on your list since you are a STEM oriented female.

If you do well on SAT math 2 and Chem,

Columbia: Reach (for everybody)
Harvard: Reach (for everybody)
Stanford: Reach (for everybody)
U Penn: Reach (for everybody)
Vanderbilt: Solid chances
Johns Hopkins: Solid chances
Boston University: In
UCLA: Good chances
UC Berkeley:Good chances
UCSD: In
UCSB: In
University of Washington: In

@20more you’re right actually, Boston isn’t a reach at all. I just wasn’t 100 percent sure. I didn’t want to exactly say match, but I didn’t want to say reach either, so I just put low reach…

And your SAT I isn’t bad at all! You did get an 800 on the CR. :stuck_out_tongue: A higher math score would just put you over the top. :)

Columbia high reach/probable rejection
Harvard high reach/probable rejection
Stanford high reach/probable rejection
U Penn high reach/probable rejection
Vanderbilt low reach/high match
Johns Hopkins low reach
Boston University match/in
UCLA in
UC Berkeley high match
UCSD in
UCSB in
University of Washington (Seattle) in

If you don’t really love Yale/Princeton it’s probably not worth applying. Numbers are good but ECs are undifferentiated.

did you mean boston college or boston university? i think you meant boston college. boston university would be a safety.

@redteabag, BU is my safety. I researched and visited BC while in Boston and I didn’t really like it as much (for me).

And thank you, everyone, for your perspectives!

Ooh! I was thinking of Boston College, not university. XD
