Like I said, my academic stats are lackluster but do you think there is any chance I could get in to Ross?

In state or out of state?

If I had to guess, during sophomore year you were paying too much attention to your startup and not enough attention to your class work. It looks like you regained your focus during junior year.

The only issue I see is sophomore year GPA. The test scores are fine and better test scores will not help. I couldn’t tell you how your application is going to be perceived but I wouldn’t be surprised if they waited to see how you do first semester senior year so I would do my best to do as well as possible in your classes and to try to make sure you are taking classes that you can do well in.

Yeah that’s basically what happened. The startup kind of took over every hour of the day. I was in class texting deals through or would go to the bathroom to call someone. After that I got some more help with the company and I took a slightly easier course load. Also, I’m in state.

I would suggest fessing up in your essay about this. It is pretty obvious from your transcript that this happened and you clearly learned something from it based on your junior year stats. If you talk about what you learned from your start up and how these skills can benefit the university community if you should be admitted, I think you have a compelling case for admission. Be positive and not defensive. I suspect that you are as talented as others who are admitted. I wouldn’t classify you as match or reach because your application is more of a unique case. You won’t know until they respond.

I think you should talk to your high school guidance counselor about this. He or she may have ideas and if you don’t know him or her it may be a good idea to become acquainted because the counselor recommendation could carry weight.

As for Ross, I wouldn’t place my bets on preferred admission but I think you should be confident of your changes of being admitted after freshman year if you are admitted to U-M.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help!
