Chance me

High School Senior, Russian (First generation American) Male.

SAT Scores:
Reading - 670
Math - 590
Writing - 680

GPA at the end of junior year was 3.22 (UW) and 3.74 (W).

I took Open Campus this senior year and have taken and passed three college courses at my local community college and am about to take two more in spring semester.

I took three AP courses and got triple 4s Junior year, as well as taken two AP courses this senior year and passed both with As.

I have participated in Chess Club, Mock Trial, and Academic Team.

I have work experience from three different locations, and currently am employed.

I am an in-state applicant and applied by priority deadline.

I'd like to think my reccomendations were stellar, and my AP teachers approved my essays.

The reason for my low GPA was that I achieved poor scores in math related classes my Freshman and Sophomore years, but made significant progress Junior year to the tune of mostly As with 1 or 2 Bs, and have straight As this Senior year.

What are my chances?

Just a small addition, I applied to enter the Smith School of Business with General Business as my major. I understand that 1300 is the minimum M+CR SAT for direct entry to the school, but is there a chance I would be admitted with my 1260?

I think you have a great chance for admission, but I do not think you will be admitted to the business school.

I think you have a good chance.

@SILENTKINK could you possibly read my thread and chance me. I would really appreciate your honest opinion!

If I am rejected from the Business school, will I be able to be undecided for my first year and reapply if my GPA is solid, or will I be unable to apply again since it’s a LEP?
Also, Will I be able to apply to other LEPs before the semester starts?

If you do not get into Smith, which is still possible, I have similar stats to you, and hope that I will somehow get in, you can still apply to Smith as a junior and just take the required classes during your freshman and sophomore year.

So I’m only unable to reapply for Smith my freshman and sophomore year? Thanks I didn’t know that, I assumed that once you were rejected once you can never get in.

Yeah you can apply as a junior as long as you took the required classes the Smith school requires. Which can be found here [Undergraduate Program - Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park](http://www.rhsmith.umd.edu/undergrad/admissionrequirements.aspx)

I found this in their FAQ on that page:

"6. If I am not admitted, may I apply again the next semester?

You can apply once only to each program location—College Park or Shady Grove. You may apply to Shady Grove and to College Park at the same time, indicating your 1st preference."

Does this mean that (if I found out I was rejected from Smith next week) I will only be able to apply to the Shady Grove program location if I reapply in junior year?

I do not think so, I am pretty sure you can reapply as a junior, but am not 100% sure.

I’ll try and call admissions tomorrow and ask about it.

Okay, PM if you find out an answer since I’m in the same boat as you.

No need to call admissions.

You can definitely reapply to the Smith school if you are not directly admitted as a freshman.

You can either apply in March of Sophomore year, or a few months later in June.
If at that time you are denied, you are out of luck.

Ah, well that sure puts my mind at ease. Thanks Terp, I appreciate the help.

Glad to help.

In-state is a positive. SAT is within range. First generation is a positive.

GPA is a little low but upward trend is good. Course schedule solid.

Pretty good chance in my opinion.
