Chance me?

I am an eighth grader currently attending a very good public school, I'm planning to apply to the following schools this fall; Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Taft, Kent, Millbrook, Loomis Chafee, and Berkshire. I am aware that most of these are stretches (particularly DA and Hotchkiss) but I would really like to know your opinions. What are my chances at these schools? Which one would fit me best?

Sports:
-Lacrosse: Five years on a town rec. team and 1 year on a modified school team (modified teams are more selective and competitive)
- Cross Country: Two years on a modified school team
-Field Hockey: Two years on a town rec. team

Extracurriculars:
-Cooking club
-School newspaper
-President of the environmental club
-Community service
-Church/youth group
-Web. designing and other retail business experience at mom's gourmet food store
-Co-President of my homeroom

Grades from last year (7th grade):
- Social Studies: A
-Science: B+ to A-
-Spanish: B
-ELA: A
-Math: B+

I know that my grades are not exactly up to par with the standard's of the schools I'm interested in applying to, however I am extremely motivated this year and intend to work very hard to get good grades. Anyway I would love to hear your thought's on my chance's of getting into any of these schools. Also, if you have any opinions or advice about interviews, dorm life, grades, anything really I would be interested in hearing those as well. Thanks in advance!

Your grades are fine, as are your EC’s/sports. I think your commitment to lacrosse and other sports is excellent. If you want to know if you fit a school, I would recommend going and visiting the school (if you are relatively close by). As for other advice, I would recommend you looking thru the other threads, I am sure you will find something of use!

Best of luck!

Honestly, I’m not so sure. Your sports are fine, and it’s good that you’re strong in lacrosse, but so are many, many other applicants of those schools! Lacrosse is one of the huge, huge sports in New England. Especially Deerfield, which has the strongest lacrosse team in the country (for BS) takes in the best of the best for that sport. Your grades are alright, it is not a huge factor as long as you have a strong passion and skill in one of your ECs. I would suggest that you highlight a passion in another area, such as a love of community service and environmental care. There are too many lax people out there for you to stand out. Many of those people are also phenomenal at hockey, squash, tennis, ect.

Work extremely hard in 8th grade, and work extra hard to form a bond with your teachers! Ask them if you have trouble, raise your hand lots in class, and talk with them! It will really help when you have to get recommendation letters.

Another part that weighs into your acceptance is race and state representation. The BSs you listed gets tons of white apllicants and lots of Asian applicants. Being hispanic, mixed-race, or Native American (being Native American is a huge hook) will give you an advantage. Also, if lots of kids from your school or state are applying, there is a smaller chance you will be accepted. You can find the state representation lists on the school websites. I remember checking for Deerfield, and finding that they had big representation in Massachusetts, Connecticut, California, and Florida. I’m not sure about the other schools, but I’m guessing it’s similliar. Being from anywhere other than New England, New York, Florida, or California will give you a boost!

Hope this helped a little, and good luck!
