High School GPA: 2.5 (dropped out after 10th grade upon failing many courses, got GED)
College GPA: 4.0
College: Community College
Credits as of transfer date: 65
SAT: 2010 (have a fair shot at 2100+ now)
ECs: Okay but not outstanding. 400+ hours at local food bank. Active PTK member with involvement in wide variety of charitable activities ranging from science-related activities to selling candy for funds. Nominated by chapter for International Scholar Laureate in Medicine program. Recipient of two Phi Theta Kappa awards, one of which comes from outside organization. Downside of ECs is no leadership experience.
Other notes: Wide variety of courses taken, but few prereqs completed (I experimented a lot, lol). And I'm a premed biology, so there's a lot of them. Should have decent essays explaining the eccentricities of my high school record and major prereqs. Am applying for financial aid.

My EFC is a bit low and price will make it or break it, lol. I can deal with 10-25k a year but beyond that it generally won’t be worth it. (I decided not to apply to Northwestern for that reason because they don’t give grants to first-year transfer students.) :p

I legitimately want to attend most of those institutions (besides the safeties). Vanderbilt, Brown and UMich are tops, though Oberlin is quite nice too.

Definitely give Brown and Vanderbilt a shot if that is where you want to go. I think you have a great chance at Vanderbilt and even Brown is a possibility. It might come down to what sort of financial aid package gets put together for you though.

I’m also applying to Vanderbilt with a 4.0 GPA from CC but only an 1800 SAT so I’m a bit more of a reach than you. Just ace those essays dude and you’ll be set. I wouldn’t worry too much about ECs. From what I’ve read the main focus when transferring is GPA. Just get some killer recs and I think you’ll be set. The only possible thing I can see hurting your chances are your prereqs.

Honestly though, you have a great shot at all those schools. Kudos to you for righting the course and doing phenomenal in school. Best of luck to you!

Vanderbilt’s COA is 61k, UM is 27k. With your low EPC you will probably receive some money but unless Vanderbilt gives you half off tuition it’s not even close. I would assume the case would be similar at the other privates you list. If I were in your shoes I would apply to Michigan and save myself some money by not applying to the other schools… unless you really really really love them.

Most times when schools meet full financial aid it means grants & scholarships PLUS loans; basically they secure you the loan to attend the school.

Lol, well I guess I’m not applying to Brown then. Thanks for letting me know; that’s 3-4 fewer essays to worry about. :)

@bomerr. That’s something to keep in mind too, I guess. I’m this far in the process so I might as well see if I get some good aid offers from some of these colleges. Vandy’s aid is a tad worse for transfer students (no merit), but we’ll see (if I can get in, that is.)
