I would greatly appreciate as much input as possible.
I am a white male from a top ranked public school near Dallas.
I am ranked 60/780 (bad I know, but very competitive)
GPA is 5.45/5
5 AP classes Junior year
6 AP classes this next senior year
Mainly 5s on AP tests
SAT: 2230 (single sitting) breakdown is 690 CR, 800 math, and 740 Writing
ACT: 34 (not sure of breakdown)
ECs: 4 year varsity swimmer and captain of team, Interact rotary club president, founder/CEO of non profit, college ambassador, Boy’s state, Southwest youth leadership conference (named outstanding student and nominated for national competition), Special Olympics swimming volunteer, homeless shelter volunteer, part of two ministries that help kids with special needs and their families, apart of elite leadership organization that only 30 out of 200 were selected to, 20 hours per week of club swimming, counselor of camp where I lead middle schoolers up 14,000 foot mountains in Colorado, and other service clubs and school events.
I have also been in contact with some graduates of W&L and demonstrated interest. If you could also give your input onto whether I would have a chance at the Johnson’s scholarship I would appreciate it.
Side note: I would be able to swim at W&L which could help me be a stronger applicant.
W&L should be a match for you, and you look like a good candidate for a Johnson Scholarship. You’re doing the right thing by demonstrating interest, assuming at least one of the W&L alumni you’ve been in contact with is in touch with the admissions office. What are you planning to study?
@yaupon I was interested in the Pre-med route majoring in biology or chemistry. However, I know W&L has a very small, selective pre-med program so I think I will go the business route if I do get accepted. I appreciate the input.
@mew6326, W&L’s Williams School of Commerce is outstanding. Williams Investment Society gives undergrads the opportunity to manage millions of the university’s endowment, and between alumni connections & Career Services contacts, D’s business major classmates had several summer internships and good jobs by fall of senior year.
You are right that fewer W&L students go on to med school than to business careers, but off the top of my head, I can think of one of D’s friends who is headed to med school this fall in home state (after having played a sport all four years) and another who is beginning a neuro PhD program at a top 20 university. Prereqs for med school aren’t easy classes anywhere, but at least at W&L they are small and faculty are accessible. It is not a crazy cutthroat competitive kind of atmosphere.
Side note: there’s nothing wrong with your class rank in a competitive school with the number of AP’s you have taken and your GPA. There are a lot of Texans at W&L, and they tend to be leaders. From your EC’s, it looks like you’d be a good fit. Keep us posted.
Looks like you are a good fit for acceptance! My son’s stats were similar. He was not a Johnson Scholar but very happy he was admitted. He was a varsity athlete but not at the collegiate level. Make sure you visit I think that is what put him in the yes category. Good luck
