Chance me.

High school senior here. I knew from day one everything I did in high school would determine my future college, and therefore I became the busiest teen in the world and jam-packed my schedule for 4 years. My goal back then was exclusively Yale, but now I’ve come out of my Yale tunnel vision and want to see what my chances are for Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, Berkeley, and the University of Oxford in England.

So basic info about me: Lower middle class female Latina, both parents are immigrants, attend a public high school of about 4,000 students. Want to major in journalism to become an investigative journalist. Currently have a 4.1 weighted GPA.

Now onto stuff I’ve done…

ECs:

  • Editor of my school’s newspaper.
  • President of school’s broadcasting club
  • Member of Yearbook club
  • President of Class of 2019 (Student Government)
  • Member of Publications club
  • Member of National Honor Society

Volunteer Work:

  • Volunteered at my local animal shelter for 2 years
-During the summer between my sophomore and junior year went on a missionary trip to the Himalayas to help children in poverty
-Summer between junior and senior year went on another missionary trip through same volunteer program to Costa Rica to help teach kids in a school
  • In my junior year around Christmastime I started a campaign to raise money for clean water in Uganda through school events such as a winter gala, school carnival, and art exhibition/auction. I raised just a little under $10,000. I was on my local news for it.

Sports:

  • JV Volleyball for sophomore year
-Varsity volleyball captain in my senior year

I studied abroad my entire junior year in Florence, Italy. I did a lot of amateur freelance journalistic work there but my most prominent was an investigative mini documentary I made reporting on how Italy has the highest percentage of children in poverty in the entirety of Europe, which I won quite a bit of awards for. I also attended ASU’s Walter Cronkite High School Summer Journalism Institute for 2 years in a row.

Is this not enough to attend a top tier school?? I just feel like I could have done more but maybe my expectations of myself are too high?

We don’t know your SAT I and SAT Subject Test scores which are extremely important. Though you have interesting ec’s, most people with better ec’s get rejected. There is no such thing as having “enough to attend a top tier school” a quick look at past results threads proves it. We also need to know your unweighted GPA. It is very important that you have safeties or you can be setting yourself up for serious failure

On your other thread you are a HS freshman in Dec 2015. What gives?

@collegemom3717 I think OP really is a freshman (why would a senior be president of the class of 2019?)

@vivekaryme I have the feeling that you are just predicting stuff, such as your entire volunteer work, which I presume hasn’t happened yet. If I am incorrect, then feel free to correct me. Otherwise, don’t post hypothetical chance threads.

I think your focus on journalism in your ECs will definitely help; a lot of people dip their toe in the water for many different things instead of focusing on one passion, but you’d definitely stand out among applicants.

Good catch, @MITer94!
