Hi -
I have an unweighted GPA of 3.4 - not bad I guess. I got a 2.68 GPA freshman year, so I don’t know how that will affect my chances. I was a volunteer for the local free zoo and also for the Boys & Girls Club. I also did dance (acro & hip hop), boxing (non-competitive), and I was on a junior roller derby league. I also had a part-time job answering phones at a pizza place. And I also formed a woman’s advocacy circle. Oh, and I was a babysitter. I took the SAT and ACT (took both twice). I got a 1510 on the SAT and a 32 on the ACT. I’m really interested in going to an HBCU like Howard or Hampton, but I’m also really interested in UC - San Diego & UC - Santa Barbara. I want to major in communications with a focus in either public relations, broadcast journalism, or media & production. I’m bi-racial - African American and Caucasian. I have very strong essay writing skills, and my teachers have written excellent letters of recommendation. If apply to 15 colleges with these credentials of mine, how many do you think I’m likely to receive acceptance into? I’m also wondering about my chances at merit scholarships. I’m sure I qualify for need-based scholarships since I was raised by a single mother who attended school full-time and worked as a bartender. But honestly, how bright (or dark) of a future do you think I have? I also took AP Government, AP Micro & Macro Economics and AP Psychology and received 4’s & 5’s on my tests, so I qualify for credit. Any thoughts?

Unless you have a UC GPA capped weighted at 4.0 or higher, both schools will be tough admit even with great test scores.
Race/ethnicity not considered in UC admissions.
Definitely worth an application but make sure you have some solid Match and Safety schools on your list. Spend time on your essays and Best of luck.

@JustDest The best place to figure out your chances for the schools you listed would be to look at each school’s student profile for the newest incoming class of students. @Gumbymom gave you the data for the UCs, and I can tell you that your SAT standardized test score is about 300 points above the average at Howard University and over 400 point above the average at Hampton University. Your GPA is average for Hampton and just slightly low side (.15 below average UW GPA) at Howard. My daughter applied with a lower SAT score (1470) and higher UW GPA (3.95) and received the largest institutional award from Hampton (25K) and eventually received a full ride (tuition, fees, room and board, and books) at Howard. So I personally don’t think you will have an issue getting into Howard and Hampton, but it is more about how much institutional aid can you receive. You would need to go ahead and get your applications in as early as possible (especially before EA for Howard) and good luck.
