Chance me?

Sorry, guys. I think I initially posted this in the wrong forum, so if you've seen this twice, that's why.

Female
Ethnicity: Black
Area: The South

Schools I'm applying to:
Amherst
Brown
Dartmouth
Duke
Tufts
Boston University
Washington University
John Hopkins
Vanderbilt
University of Miami
Kenyon
Eckerd (safety)
Elon (safety)
UGA (safety)

I started out with a 4.2 (weighted) and a 3.8 (unweighted). I pretty much kept that until junior year last year. I'm not going to go into my life story here, but my grades fell. I now have a 3.7 (weighted), and 3.3 unweighted. I'm thinking that's going to hurt my chances.

Made Honor Roll Freshman and Sophomore years in High School.

ACT: 33, perfect score on reading
Writing: 7 out of 12

I'm the artsy type. Accepted into Kenyon Young Writers Program and Iowa Young Writer's Program. Very prestigious, only 120 out of 800 are accepted. Also been accepted into school literary magazine. I do plan on majoring in Creative Writing or something like that.

I was a Youth Delegate for my state's annual church conference. I'm in the Environment Club at school, as well as President of the Writing Club. Also in Young Democrats.

AP Classes taken/will take to date (school doesn't allow freshman to take AP's):

Honors Spanish I, II, III, IV, and will take Honors Spanish 6 senior year
Honors 10th Grade Literature
Honors Biology
Ap Language
Ap Psychology
AP Us History
AP World History
AP Art History
AP Literature

Extra: Worked for my father for two years to get enough money to self-publish a book I wrote. Plan to (possibly) intern at a publishing company this upcoming year.

My recs will be very good, and I'm sure I will do very well on the essays, since writing is my thing. Since most of the schools I'm applying for above have an arts supplement to the Common App, I will submit either a screenplay or a portion of my novel.

I go to a public highschool, considered one of the best in my state (and that's saying a lot). We hold college fairs, where colleges like Harvard and Princeton come visit.

Income is under a 100,000.

Chances? And if I'm being completely un-realistic here, maybe some suggestion too? Thank you.

You actually have a good shot at all the unis! Although your GPAs might drag you down a bit, you have definitely showned passion in arts/writing.

The only schools that I will say are slight reach for you are probably Brown, Duke and Dartmouth (maybe also Johns Hopkins). But you have a great shot

Chance back:

In at all b/c of URM.

I’m sorry, I’m not up to date with the acronyms. What is URM?

Thanks for the chance!

Your courseload is great, and if you can explain your family circumstances (I know there’s space on the Common App) I’m sure colleges will understand. Your ACT is great, and you’ve shown an incredible commitment to your writing. Colleges look for people who are firmly entrenched in the most important things to them. And if you go to a well-known school, that’s a plus. URM status is great. I don’t know much about most of the colleges you’re applying for, but of the ones I do: Brown: mid to high reach, Dartmouth: high reach, Duke: low reach, Tufts: low reach, BU: match. Good luck!

URM: under-represented minority (Latino, Native, African-American)

apply to harvard since you’re URM

Amherst, Brown, Dartmouth, Duke, and Vandy are all very, very high reaches. Regardless of your URM status, you have a 3.3 in GPA. Your extracurriculars are great, though.

Does it not matter that I started out with over a 4.0 in GPA?

I’m legacy at Duke, if that helps.

That’s weighted. You started with a 3.8. The legacy does help, though.

I think your list is very reasonable and you at least have a chance at all, especially with the URM boost (and possible geographic boost as well??). I agree with what you have chosen for safeties. Brown, Amherst, Dartmouth are reaches for anyone, but I think you’ve got a very good shot. Those three, along with JHU and Tufts, are the only place where I foresee any difficulty. Good luck!

You have at least a chance at all of your schools wtih the URM. I think
Amherst - reach
Brown - low reach ( they love the urm)
Dartmouth - reach
Duke - reach
Tufts - probably a match or high match
Boston University - in
Washington University - match/high match
John Hopkins - high match
Vanderbilt - high match
University of Miami - low match
Kenyon - low match/
Eckerd (safety) - agree
Elon (safety) - agree
UGA (safety) - agree

I think this is an overall good list, and that you will get into at least 1 of your reaches.

I think you have a good chance, especially as an URM. If there is any significant personal story that was mostly beyond your contol behind the drop in GPA, it may be beneficial to elaborate upon it in your essay.

You should apply to Duke early decision if you’re a legacy. And yes, the fact that you are an underrepresented minority is a HUGE help. You have no idea how much it will help you. I am confident that you can get into Duke, just apply early : )

I think you have a great shot at those schools, because of your URM and your obvious passion for your major. The only thing holding you back for schools like Brown, Dartmouth, and Tufts may be your GPA. Also, think about retaking your ACT to get that writing score just a little higher. Good luck! And thanks for chancing me :)

Amherst - safety
Brown - reach
Dartmouth - reach
Duke- low match
Tufts- match
Boston University-safety
Washington University- match
John Hopkins- match
Vanderbilt- low reach
University of Miami- match
Kenyon- never heard of
Eckerd- safety
Elon- safety
UGA -safety

chance back please :)
