Chance me? (:

So I have applied for Texas A&M since October 27th. It's March now and I am SUPER anxious. May you tell me if you think I will get in? I know opinions aren't going to affect my admission into A&M, but it will make me feel better (:

-Senior at Bellaire High School in Houston/Bellaire, Texas area
-Class Rank: 247/747 (top 32%..I know it's pretty terrible. the top 10% at my school is a 4.6 out of a 5.0 GPA :/)
-GPA: 3.8 out of a 5.0 (weighted).
-ACT: 26 (32 English, 25 Math..I'm bad at Math. haha)
-SAT: Combined M + R = 1200, but I didn't send in my SAT scores because it was just a little bit above a combined 1700 (too low in my opinion), and I don't have the money to retake it over and over again.

Course load

A&M is my NUMBER ONE CHOICE. I'll be so devastated if I get rejected ):
BTW, do you guys know if A&M rejects people at the end of April, or do they do that throughout the admissions process?

Thanks!

what did you do to show A&M you are their first choice?

Assuming you meant what did I do to show A&M they are my first choice on my college list:
-I went to their Prospective Student Center (PSC).
-I have also visited the campus a few times.
-I went to College Fair Night at my high school and focused solely on Texas A&M.
-I e-mail the admissions counselors frequently (but I try not to annoy them too much).
-I keep in touch with one PSC in case I have any specific questions.

all these sound good. I assume you registered at the campus. These will better your odds since you aren’t in the top quarter. Good luck to you!

aw, people don’t really respond to these kind of threads eh ):

sandrabui - we don’t know or have confidence to tell you what we think. At the 32% of your class… you aren’t exactly a sure thing. You didn’t give us your SAT individual scores, and your ACT is 26 with a math 25 - you gotta know A&M is big on the math. Your english was excellent - so I am assuming your SAT English was high but math low.
You are in the iffy zone.
We all wish you well and we hope you get in, but we just dont know your chances enough to say.

What college did you apply for? Looks kind if iffy so far, but you should get in.

Xcellerator - I have applied for UT Austin, Baylor University, Texas Tech, University of Houston, Houston Baptist University, St. John’s University (New York), and Texas A&M. I have been accepted to all of them EXCEPT A&M. Waiting is so hard ):

you were accepted to UT? Seriously?

he meant what college (major) did you apply to at A&M

Yes, I meant the major/college at A&M lol. But wow, accepted to UT with those stats?!?! D:

^^^^ I am thinking the exact same thing. I know people borderline top 10% that are probably not going to be accepted to UT. But 32%? Never heard of this before. Congrats nonetheless.

Oh, sorry, usually when people say college I think of universities lol.
And UT…a lot of kids in my school got into UT by being in even top 40% and such. It’s weird, I know…but my school is well-known for its around 37 semi-national merit finalists, a girl named Li Boynton who got invited to sit by Michelle Obama at the State of the Union Address (you should look her up!), most of the top 10% kids going to some sort of Ivy league…etc Sadly, I’m not one of those people :X Bellaire High School (Bellaire, TX) <–you should look it up on wikipedia or something (even though wikipedia isn’t super reliable, but meh) if you want to learn about my high school for some reason xD

Anyway, I just gave you guys an off-topic story, sorry! I guess my point is that rank isn’t always everything because each school is not equally competitive/difficult.
But yeah, I picked Biomedical Science as my first major, and Health as my second.

Wowwwww. Bellaire is a really big school though, is it not? I live around the Houston area too, but haven’t heard much of Bellaire since I was from a 4A school. But wow, that’s ridiculous. I had better stats than you and got rejected (CAP’ed). Actually, a lot of kids that had better stats than you this year got CAP’ed/waitlisted (2100 SAT/~top 25% class rank). Well, your school must be a big feeder then. But congrats on your acceptance to UT. That’s just crazyyyy in my opinion.

So BIMS is in College of Science, which isn’t really competitive. You should get in then.

Xcellerator - Bellaire has about…3200 kids? So I suppose, I’m not sure what people consider big haha. But I’m sorry! Was UT your number one choice? I hate how people who really deserve to go get CAP’ed or rejected completely ): I think UT was just being random this year though…my friend has a 4.3/5.0 GPA at my school, so he was about top 16%? He got a 2300 SAT, but got CAP’ed, so yeah I don’t know what’s up with UT. The fact that he goes to the same school I do, does WAY better in EVERYTHING, and gets rejected is really weird.

And I hope I get in! It’s sad that I can get into UT, and I haven’t heard from A&M :/

Well, that’s almost twice the size of my school. Yeah, UT was my top choice. UT must be really random this year since your friend really got screwed. :/

A&M usually starts making their decisions late in March and on to April for review applicants. So keep waiting some more.

Are you at UT now? I don’t know why, but I’m just randomly imagining you to be a sophomore in college haha d:

And I shall do just that.

I’m not sure I buy the UT acceptance.
26 ACT. And by my calculations in 33%, 3.8 weighted on a 5.0 scale.
You would think at such an academically rated High School you would be able to pull some better SAT/ACT scores on the first shot. I just don’t get this senerio. I did google Bellaire high school, it is a good school - and I would buy the whole UT acceptance if your ACT/SAT scores were on line with the rest of the story.

It is a nationally recognized school, but that recognition only comes from the ratio of number of students taking AP/IB test to the number of graduating seniors. 700 students in your senior class is by no means small, but nothing near the near 1200 in my graduating class this year. Having 1200 students does not help when it comes to those rankings. Also, my school does not offer the same amount of AP/IB classes. We have a lot but nothing close to what yal have. Anyways, that being said, while Bellaire High School is impressive, I do not see how it should be treated any differently by admissions than any other school. I mean 3.8 weighted would barely crack top 20% at my school, and those students in that range simply would not be accepted to UT. Period.

klparker312 - I really have no reason to lie…and I understand my scores aren’t high. UT is just really weird, and I will honestly say that I don’t deserve it in terms of test scores and other numbers. I had the chance to get a higher GPA with Regular classes, but I decided to do AP instead. And it’s not all about numbers, it’s also about how you apply yourself in the community, right? Meh.

aGGieENGiNeeR - I think perhaps they are trying to focus more on non-numerical related matters? And in terms of Bellaire being treated differently, I really don’t know if they really do…I just know that when I hear someone with a lower weighted GPA than me (or anyone else for that matter) being top 10% at their school and being able to go wherever they want in Texas is a tad unfair. For instance, I know a friend who has a 3.5 GPA, top 10% at her school, 1500 SAT (total)…auto admission to any public Texas school. So yeah, there’s always a bit of unfairness in the whole process…and I know my UT thing is unfair. But don’t let me represent my whole school because usually people in the first quarter at my school have a 4.1 weighted GPA and at least a 1950 SAT. I’m just a little out there…and I just got lucky I suppose. :/
