Junior. Hispanic. Income ~24k (mom doesn't work). OOS (Florida). Looking to go to UMich for Computer Engineering/Science

GPA: Currently 3.85 UW. Only got 2 Bs.. 1 in Alg 1 (7th Grade) and 1 in Alg 2 (9th Grade).. which is dumb because I passed Pre-calc and AP Calculus with an A.

Freshman GPA was like 3.8 or whatever and sophomore was 4.0 and junior looking to be 4.0 so upward trend?

Weighted GPA is 4.79.. but idk how UMich calculates it.

Class Rank: Was 34 sophomore year with 2 Bs but I ended up getting Straight As that year so I should be top 20 in the end, out of like 500+.

SATs: 1930.. I got a 640 in math. I know I can get over a 700. So let's say I submit my application with a 2000-2100 composite.

Classes: 8 AP classes by the end of senior year and 8 dual enrollment classes as well.. I doubt UMich will accept my DE credits right? I took 4 years of tech classes as electives. Freshman year - Intro to IT and Sopho-Senior will be PC Support 1,2,3. I will be CompTIA A+ certified at the end of senior year.

ECs: Not too good.. did nothing fresh/sopho year. This year I'm in 5 clubs and I will have leader positions in 2 of them next year (one being president of math club). Looking to get over 100 hours at a resort for kids with terminal diseases. Gonna get a job in the summer.

You’ll get in with a 2000-2100 for sure. Your EC’s don’t actually matter that much. Michigan mainly looks for GPA, course rigor, and test scores.

Hmm, since I’m OOS the cost will be tens of thousands of dollars… how much do you think I will get for Fin Aid if my total income is 24k for two parents?

Adcoms will actually be very impressed that you’re succeeding in with low income and as a URM. You should get a lot of financial aid at most or all of the colleges you apply to. Have you thought about getting a full ride MIT or Caltech?

Applicants fill out an application on QuestBridge’s website. They sponsor about half the applicants and forward these finalists’ apps to the colleges they picked from the list. About a tenth of these finalists get a “match,” or full-ride acceptance, during the first round of decisions. Benefit of just being a finalist is that QuestBridge will pay for app fees during the regular decision season if you don’t get a match at first.

There’s a lot to read about the process. Know the application process back to front.

Essays get more important as you apply to the more selective colleges. Dazzle the adcoms with your adventure through the Everglades and bring tears with pathos. They want to know: so what’s your story?

Thanks for the encouragement guys, but idk about top schools… don’t you need over 2200s on SATs and awesome ECs… I don’t have either. I’ll be satisfied with UMich, UF, or GTech, or anything like that. But if you guys think I have shots at higher schools then I will give them a shot.

Why Moore’s Law Soy xD?

Ahh, I see. Does QuestBridge also give out less scholarships than full rides? Like 50% or $10k dollars or something?

I know I can get 700+ on math and writing but it’s the reading that kills me… I just don’t understand how I’m supposed to know what soporific or rudimentary and all these other words mean, haha.

Rudimentary isn’t too tough. Soporific – now that’s a word I’ve never even heard of.

I know what you mean though – I didn’t study vocab. at all for the SATs because it annoyed me. You can still get a pretty good verbal score just winging the vocab. Just make sure you can nail the critical reading.

Haha, yea those two words were on the last one I took in May… the thing that ****es me off is that if you know the word its so easy… the sentence was something as easy as "Bob was tired so he had a ______ night. The answer was soporific because it means sleepiness, lethargic ,etc . But whatever…

My goal is to get a 650 on reading. and 700+ on the other two. Do you think I should take the test in June? I haven’t really been studying because I have loads of projects due and finals are coming up, had AP exams a few weeks ago, and I’m stressing about what colleges to apply and all this crap. . I hate how the tests are back to back months, giving no time to study. The only reason I’m taking it in June is because the next one is when? October? How will I get those October scores in time for ED/EA. And i already took the SAT twice… so yea. What do you suggest I do? I would rather take it in October because I know I will have all summer to study and I will work my butt off.

But, for example, since the deadline for UMich is October 1, they will see my 1930 and not a potential 2100. So idk what to do…?

dont take it in june, and isn’t the registration deadline passed already? Definitely try to raise ur SAT scores(if u need strategies pm me or post it in SAT forums) over the summer if u can, and you would in good running for some good schools.

Yea, but I’m already signed up for it. I can cancel it though. So it doesn’t matter that I will take the 3rd SAT so late in October? Will colleges still see it even if its Early Decision? And yes I need some strategies, can I PM you tomorrow?
