Chance Me?

Hi, I'm a US high school senior and I'm applying (early decision) to Cornell's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for the AEM Program (Applied Economics and Management). I hope to concentrate on Environmental & Resource Economics and/or International Trade & Development. My goal is to get a law degree and eventually work for the government (either in the US or Canada, since I'm a green card holder of US (I live in NJ) and citizen of Canada).

My stats are:
GPA: 3.69 unweighted, 4.89 weighted. My school doesn't rank.

SAT I (taken twice, best scores): 800 R, 670 M, 770 W

SAT II: 750 Literature, 750 US History, 630 Math II, 630 Biology (not sure if I'm sending the math one or the bio one. Definitely sending in the lit and history ones though.)

APs: 5 on the AP US History Exam. Taking AP Lang and Comp, AP Statistics, AP French, and AP US Gov & Pol tests on May 2011. Expecting a 4/5... fingers crossed.

Courses:
- Grade 12: Taking Calc 1 - Level 1, and Physics - H (and all the APs mentioned above).

Grade 11: Chem-H, English 3-H, AP US History, Trig - Level 1, French 4-H, Financial Planning (semester course) - Level 2 (required elective), Business and Consumer Law - Level 2 (required course)

Grade 10: Bio- H, English 2-H, US History 1 - H, Geometry - Level 1, Algebra 2 - Level 1, French 3 - Level 1

Grade 9: Physical Science - Level 1, English 1 - H, World History - H, Algebra 1 - Level 1, French 2 - Level 1, Visual Art - Level 2 (required elective)

Extracurricular Activites: (I don't have much)
Odessey of the Mind - team member, qualified for regional competitions
St. Peter's Hospital - volunteer, ~2 years, 3 hours almost every weekend
Woodbrook Elementary Latchkey - through Key Club, 3 hours every week
Kumon Math and Reading center - tutoring job, summer of grade 10 - now, 3.5 hrs/week
National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society member
The Hawkeye (school newspaper) - Business associate, grade 10 and 11

What are my chances? And how good is the AEM program? What is it's reputation? How are the classes/proffessors? How good is campus recruiting? What are my future job prospects (if I end up not going to law school)?

If you are an AEM grad or current student, please respond. Thank you for taking the time.

You need a math and a science SAT subject test for CALS. It’s one of the requirements. You should bring those up if you want to get in, especially AEM.

Thanks, I definitely will.

bumpity bump …

Cornell CALS ED: Reach

I think that your GPA and your SAT subject test scores are a little on the low side. I agree with the above post in that you should probably retake them to score above 700+.Do you have any specific activities you are interested in? If you write good essays, I think you would be a great applicant.

Chance me back? : )

Thanks so much. I would chance you, but I’m afraid I don’t really know what CALS is looking for, which is why I asked to be chanced myself. I hope you do get in though, your stats are kind of great.

Don’t worry too much about the SAT subject scores, I doubt they are hardly looked at. We’ve had 4 students admitted into CALS in the past couple of years who had subject scores in your range.

Thanks, csdad. But does this mean I should be worrying about my SAT score?
Also, If I apply to ILR, can I switch to CALS once I’m in/later?

The AEM program is competitive (the admissions rate is less than 15%) but your academic record makes you competitive (the only person who can really chance you is an admissions person, and they’re not going to do that on this board).

Your SAT score puts you in the range.

An internal transfer is doable, though from what I understand, internal transfers to AEM are a little competitive.

Remember that your application essay needs to showcase why you’re a match for the AEM program. Focus on that.

Thanks cornellpezra. Also, I unknowingly did not waive my right on the FERPA thing. None of my school forms have been sent it yet, is there any way I can waive my right now? If not, how much will this affect me?

Disregard the above post. Can anyone chance me for ILR ED?

Bumpbumpbump!

You still need to submit a math subject test for ILR, and your 630 in Math II will hurt your chances. Unless you submit just your ACT with writing.

Your SAT II score will not hurt you significantly. our essays & letters of Rec. are much more important. SAT II scores are not used in the Common Data Set which all college ratings, etc. are based on. Thus a low score on these will not keep you out…if everything else in your application makes Cornell think you’re a great fit for them.
