Chance mwee, pwetty pwetty pweese?(;

+Intended Major- Double major in Political Science and Business Related Law (planning on going to law school).
+Race: White.
+Gender: Male
+Location: Georgia.
+School type: Unranked mid-size public.
+Parents education: One or more parent recieved a college degree.
+Household Income: $40,000 to $50,000. Father supports MANY children. Financial aid doesn't matter, grandfather's wealthy, he'll be paying for my education.
+GPA: Probably like 3.7 to 3.8 by graduation. I have a couple of Cs in math and Spanish classes. Teachers for classes in which I've had a C were all fired, not that it matters haha.
+SAT: Probably a 2100, my SAT practice tests have been at the following, lately: CR-720 M-620 W-750)
+APs:
-10th: AP Euro, AP US Gov.
-11th: AP Lang, AP USH.
-12th: AP Lit, AP Psych, AP Bio, AP Macro.
+ECs/Awards/Leadership/SummerActivities:
-Eagle Scout.
-Senior Patrol Leader (highest youth-held position in a Boy Scout troop) of my troop.
-Order of the Arrow (scouting's national honor society).
-Member of NHS.
-3 week Summer@Brown pre-college course on the foundation of law, summer before junior year.
-Few service hours from NHS.
-Should have a good Eagle Scout project that helps the community.
-I help out with a small organization that gives "essentials" to the homeless.
-3rd place at regionals for NHD, invited to state, partner was out of town. (8th grade, does that belong on a college application? It's still an award...)
+Essays: Should be amazing, I'm a really, REALLY great writer... I mean, really good. My AP lang teacher wants me to enter some competitions. I might, if I get inspired.
+Teacher Recommendations: One will be excellent, as in "best student I've ever taught", I could read this teacher's thoughts, we're like the same person. One will be pretty generic but praising. I might get a third from my instructor at Summer@Brown, who was a journalist, lawyer, and published author. I dominated in our mock trial, and I was good in class, so I got a good evaluation from him, but my college-level 3-page paper I wrote in 43 minutes was awful, so that's mentioned. I might write something good sometime and ask him to evaluate it, and then ask him to be my additional recommendation.
+Counselor Recommendation: Will most likely be dreadful. At my school you don't get close to your counselor, at all. But I've had conflict with mine. She forced me to take another year of non-required foreign language, threatening that if I don't, she wouldn't sign my diploma.

I think that's all... Now, for the schools(: I'll order them by largest reach to easiest safety.

*Brown
*University of Chicago (EA)
*Georgetown (EA)
*Emory (ED, Grandpa went there, so legacy, I think?)
*Brandeis (EA)
*Tulane (EA)
*American
*Northeastern (EA)
*Shimer College
*University of Georgia (EA)
*Hofstra

Emory's my first choice, with Tulane being my second choice, so if I can get some feedback on those, mainly, and the other schools too, that'd be great. By the way, I'm not sure on what qualifies as legacy status haha, sorry. Also not sure if I can apply ED to Emory and EA to the other schools, namely Tulane

I'll gladly chance anyone back(: Any advice or school recommendations are also welcome(: thanks guys and gals of CC(:

I think Emory ED is a good plan, with the others EA. Smart thinking.

hey! I think you’re a strong candidate in general, but your test scores will be crucial. Brown might be a reach but if you pull of amazing essays and rec’s as well as making sure that your interests are “quantified” (e.g. if you love writing, make sure you DO do those competitions- I think this is the only way that colleges know that you’re involved in these interests of yours), you should be competitive! Again, it’s hard to judge without final SAT’s, GPA and rank, but I think you’re going to be a good candidate for a lot of schools listed on there!

You seem like a very qualified candidate for both Tulane and Emory. Especially with ED and EA, you’ll be fine.

Good luck with being a “really, REALLY great writer”!

Hah, sometimes I need it… Thanks(: I’m not sure what I’d write my essay about though… Most things I write about are controversial, so I go about it logically and make great points, stylishly. But an essay that’s just supposed to… Embody me and who I am, I guess, sounds difficult to write. Today I wrote an interesting essay though, about perseverance. Opened with “If you’re going through hell, keep on going.” by Winston Churchill, and led into how that philosophy was applied by the people of london during the nearly-constant bombing at the hands of the Luftwaffe. Got to use a quote AND history to open with, in AP Lang, so I liked that(: Anyway, sorry to blab haha, and thanks for the chance and the well wishes. Same to you(:

I think you’re definitely in a strong position for Emory, along with many of your EA’s (except UChicago and Georgetown, which, let’s face it, are a reach for most people haha). It’s good that you’re really dedicated to the Eagle Scouts, too. But like huatut123 said, it’s difficult to really say for sure without a final SAT/GPA.

Actual SAT scores will be critical! You cannot really go on the prep scores - they are somewhat of a guide but taking the actual SAT differs. I was scoring 800’s on the practice CR tests and scored a 740 on the real test. Keep preping for the SAT. I would avoid being controversial in your essay. Also, try to make nice with your guidance counselor - it will show maturity & can not hurt!

Based on SAT scores similar to your practice scores…

*Brown (Reach for everyone!)
*University of Chicago (EA) (reach)
*Georgetown (EA) (reach )
*Emory (ED, Grandpa went there, so legacy, I think?) - (IN)
*Brandeis (EA) - ( probably IN)
*Tulane (EA) - (IN)
*American - ( IN )
*Northeastern (EA) -(IN)
*Shimer College - (Never heard of this school)
*University of Georgia (EA) - (IN)
*Hofstra - (IN)

First of all thanks for posting on my chance thread. Second, I agree with Rah Rah, get good board scores and youll be a very strong candidate! I hope to see you at Brown next year!

This applicant is going to Emory. No Brown Application will be needed. Case closed.

Strong candidate for all schools. Excellent stats and ECs, and with EA you should be a shoe in for most of your choices. I wouldn’t worry about applying.
I also wouldn’t worry too much about the recommendation. Your stats and ECs clearly show that you are a worthy candidate.
However, it all depends on your real SAT/GPA. If it comes close to what you’ve estimated, you should be in.
Brown, however, might be a little tough, but that’s because it’s a reach for everyone
Good luck!! :)

Brown and Georgetown are reaches but I think you have a great chance at Emory if you do well on the SATs. Also since everything matters with these schools you should at least try to patch things up with your guidance counselor or ask the school for a new one. Strong application overall, best of luck.

I think the main holes in your application is your gpa and SAT. However, schools might not be too concerned if you have good grades in other classes. With that being said, here are your chances as I believe them to be:
*Brown
*University of Chicago (EA) (high reach)
*Georgetown (EA) (reach)
*Emory (ED, Grandpa went there, so legacy, I think?) (high match/low reach) for some reason, people seem to be convinced you’ll get in, so i don’t know. I don’t know Emory’s policies about legacy.
*Brandeis (EA) (match)
*Tulane (EA) (match)
*American (low match/safety)
*Northeastern (EA) (low match/safety)
*Shimer College (i don’t know this school)
*University of Georgia (EA) (safety)
*Hofstra (i don’t know this school)
Also, chance me?

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned yet, but I thought you can’t apply ED anywhere if you go EA to Georgetown?

P.S; what most of the people have said before is correct; you’ll be a strong candidate. :)

^^^ This is true- if you EA to Georgetown, you can’t do binding ED anywhere else.

Ahh, thought so.

EliKresses, you may have to do some adjustments to your list…

I’ll just apply to Georgetown RD then, if I don’t get into Emory ED or Tulane EA. Though I know my chances at Georgetown’ll be slim, well, they already were haha. Thanks for the chances guys(: Will be chancing back, make sure to post a link if you want(:

*Brown - Reach
*University of Chicago (EA) - Reach
*Georgetown (EA) - Reach
*Emory (ED, Grandpa went there, so legacy, I think?) - Not sure… don’t know much about it
*Brandeis (EA) - High match
*Tulane (EA) - Not sure…
*American - Not sure again…
*Northeastern (EA) - Match
*Shimer College No idea…
*University of Georgia (EA) No idea…
*Hofstra No idea

Sorry I’m not really sure about a lot of these schools.

Good luck though :)

You’re certainly well qualified for Emory – though the 30% overall acceptance rate makes it impossible to say anyone is a shoe-in. The fact that your Grandfather went there should help somewhat. You say he’s ‘rich’ if he is a big contributor to Emory, it might help A LOT.

If Tulane’s admissions criteria are the same this year as they were last year, you have an excellent chance of admissions, possibly with a merit scholarship.

Since these are your top two choices, and I think you’ll get into one or both, little need to analyze the rest of the list, other than to say it looks like a well thought out list, with schools in all categories – reaches, matches and safeties

Bump bump bump…(:

Hey Eli! Long time to talk. Hope your year is going well so far :). I think you have a pretty good idea of where you stand and I don’t have too much to say, I just wanted to say hi. I think its great that you managed to find a lot of EA schools, just one note- Georgetown is single choice EA which means you wouldn’t be allowed to apply to emory early decision at the same time. Good luck with standardized test hope you do well!
