Chance My Cousin Please? I will chance back

Hello all, could you chance my cousin for these schools based on his criteria? He messed up in his freshman year (relative to where he is now) and works extremely hard and both improved his academic success and rigor as High School progressed. In his current senior schedule, he has all As. I am only including the gpa without freshman year because I know colleges look at freshman less harshly. (These GPAs are not taking into account current senior grades)

W GPA (Including Freshman): 4.08
UW GPA (Including Freshman): 3.65

W GPA (not including freshman): 4.3
UW GPA (not including freshman): 3.73

Colleges

Cornell
Columbia
MIT
Caltech
U Penn
Emory
UVA
WUSTL
Duke
U Chicago
JHU
Michigan State
UC Berkeley
UCLA
Northwestern

Thanks in advance!

Michgan State is a sure one. I think all the Ivies are reaches, except for maybe Cornell. I think UCLA is possible. All the other ones, I am not so sure because I really do not know much about them. But I do think he is able to get into either Northwestern, Emory, or UCLA.

bumppppppppp

Cornell
Columbia
MIT
UPenn

I’d say all the Ivies are reaches simply due to the competitiveness to be accepted; however, you have a GREAT chance at getting into one of them.

Caltech - low, low reach. Very attainable with your credentials.
Emory
UVA - I’m in state so it’s a lot easier but you should be fine for out of state
WUSTL - As an in state applicant you should be fine.
Duke - again, a low low reach.
U Chicago - you honestly should be fine, nothing to worry about too much.
JHU - not too familiar with Johns Hopkins, but shouldn’t be more than a low reach
Michigan State - definitely for sure

UC Berkeley
UCLA - these 3 see below
Northwestern

not sure about these 3 (not familiar) but looking at your credentials you should be fine

Ivies: reaches
Johns Hopkins: low reach
Caltech: Low reach? The main issue I see is that the ECs don’t have the mathematics focus that I’m sure many do.
Apart from that I basically agree with concert;
UCLA, NW, Emory: high match
Michigan State: match

While your cousin sounds like an excellent student, all the Ivies are reaches simply due to the nature of the Ivies. MIT and Caltech are low reaches, but favor applicants with more mathematics extra-curriculars. Chicago and Northwestern are low reaches as well.
UCLA and Berkley are high matches. WUSTL and MSU are safeties.

Chance me? Cornell

Cornell- low reach
Columbia- reach
MIT- reach
Caltech- reach
U Penn- low reach/reach
Emory- low match
UVA- match
WUSTL- low reach/reach (I’ve seen them reject Harvard acceptees)
Duke- low reach/reach
U Chicago- low reach
JHU- high match/low reach
Michigan State- safety
UC Berkeley- match
UCLA- match
Northwestern- low reach

I think he has a great shot at all of these schools and will get into a fair amount of them. He seems to be a very competitive applicant.

Sort of random, but do you learn Carnatic music?

Here are my thoughts

Cornell Stretch
Columbia Stretch
MIT Stretch
Caltech Stretch
U Penn Less of a stretch
Emory Probably accepted
UVA Probably accepted
WUSTL Probably accepted
Duke borderline
U Chicago Probably accepted
JHU Stretch
Michigan State Probably Accepted
UC Berkeley Less of a stretch
UCLA Probably Accepted
Northwestern Probably accepted

GPA could be a little better but otherwise a very impressive resume. I would say:

Cornell: High Match
Columbia: Reach
MIT: Reach
Caltech: Low Reach
U Penn: Reach
Emory: Match
UVA: Match
WUSTL: Match
Duke: Match
U Chicago: High Match
JHU: No idea
Michigan State: Match
UC Berkeley: Low Match
UCLA: Low Match
Northwestern: Low Reach

Cornell - Low reach
Columbia - Reach
MIT - Reach
Caltech - High reach (Caltech has 800 on Math II from 25% to 75%)
U Penn - Low reach
Emory - Match
UVA - Match
WUSTL - High match
Duke - Reach
U Chicago - Reach
JHU - High match
Michigan State - Safety
UC Berkeley - Match
UCLA - Match
Northwestern - High match/low reach

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1603030-predict-me-game-will-chance-back.html

bump…

Cornell - High match
Columbia - Reach
MIT - Reach
Caltech - reach
U Penn - Low reach/high match
Emory - Match
UVA - Match
WUSTL - match
Duke - Reach
U Chicago - Reach(essays are big deal)
JHU - High match/match
Michigan State - Safety
UC Berkeley - high Match
UCLA - Match
Northwestern - High match/low reach

Your cousin has good scores. But Ivy’s and these reach schools don’t always want super-high scores. I got into Princeton on both brains and my passion. These schools want passion in their students. If he wants to go to any of these schools, he needs to be passionate and convince the schools that he is going to change the planet in some way. It worked for me with Princeton and I only had a 2200. I also had Eagle Scout. Also, it’s not quantity of activities…it’s the p word devoted to each of them.

i agree wholeheartedly. His passion is music, which is why he achieved international certificates to show that. Do you think all this would help him? and what are your opinions about the other colleges

bumpppppppp

Bumppppppppppppppp

Cornell - match
Columbia - low Reach
MIT - mid/high Reach
Caltech - low reach
U Penn - Low reach/match
Emory - Match
UVA - Match
WUSTL - match
Duke - low Reach
U Chicago - low Reach
JHU - low reach/match
Michigan State - definitely getting in
UC Berkeley - high match
UCLA - high Match
Northwestern - math/low reach

bumppppppppppp

Ivies: Reaches except for Cornell, which is a low reach/high match, and maybe UPenn (low reach)
MIT and UChicago: Mid-reach/reach
Johns Hopkins, Duke, WUSTL: Low reach
Caltech: Low reach (ditto about the lack of math-intensive extracurriculars)
UCLA, UCB, NW, Emory, UVA: high match/match
Michigan State: accepted for sure
